Hi! This is my first time on your site and this will be my first time to Ireland. I'm going with my husband and another couple, leaving 24 Nov. 2009, for 12 days. We've been to England and Scotland for the same length of time in Sept/Oct. We did the "touristy" things, but this trip we want to see the "off the beaten trail" sights and of course some of the well known spots. No reservations, just go where the road leads and stop when we want to. Stay a few days and move on. However, I do plan on reservations for the first and last nights of our trip. We are pretty laid back and we are always up for adventure. But, we really don't care for hustle and bustle, crazy nightlife or shopping, although we are 40-ish and fun. We love to stay at B&B's that have a quaint little pub(on the property or within walking distance) where we can have a few ales and play cards in the evening. An old country Inn with a stream? Know any? We are planning to stay a couple of nights at Ballynahinch Castle in Connemara and we want to attend a mideval banquet. I'm not sure how to plan a route that will make the best of our time. I haven't decided on whether to fly in and out of Dublin or Shannon, but Shannon sounds like the better choice the more info. I get. Will we have trouble finding B&B's open in Nov.? Would you recommend some small, old towns that we could visit? Can you give advice on how to fly by the seat of our pants?!LOL Thanks a bunch!!
Welcome to my forum! I hope you will find it a good place to plan your itinerary. You are wise to be planning well in advance. Do go to my "Getting Started" page for lots of info to jump start your trip. And contact Tourism Ireland for free info, maps and booklets.
I agree that Shannon will work best for the type of trip you have in mind. It is always my airport of preference. In November probably the only banquet operating will be the one at Bunratty. Perhaps you can do it on your last night in the country.
At the end of November you will find many B&Bs closing down for the season. Order the Town & Country book from Tourism Ireland and it will give you opening dates for B&Bs. But keep in mind that the listings are just a guide. Sometimes a B&B will shut down earlier if there are not a lot of tourists around. If you have a list of B&Bs that appeal to you, you can contact them the evening before you plan to be in an area to see what is available. The local tourist offices will also book you a B&B if you have problems.
Do note that Ballynahinch is not a real castle but an old fishing lodge in a beautiful setting. I think it will fulfill your dream of an old country inn with a stream as well as a lake, gardens and more.
Michele, I just got the books from Tourism Ireland. They are excellent!! I am glad you had mentioned about this before and I just got around to ordering them. THANKS youngka kristimac, go ahead and order them, they don't take long to get here at all.....
