Hi Everyone! This is such a helpful group! I appreciate all the assistance I've been getting!
So we are renting a car for our vacation in Ireland and the last few days of the trip we'll be in Dublin. Do we need a car for Dublin or should we turn it back in?
I always recommend turning in your vehicle before venturing into Dublin. The hassle of navigating the streets and the cost and limited availability of parking make it more of a headache than I would wish on anyone.
You can either take a taxi or bus to the airport on your departure morning. I would opt for the Taxi, as there will be no delays that way enroute to the airport.
You will save some money, turning it in early, usually.
On my previous ten trips, I've been to Dublin four or five times. On THOSE trips, I've driven IN Dublin -- on only two occassions.
The first was in June of '04, on a Sunday, just long enough to drop the family and luggage at the hotel and then return the car to the airport.
LAST summer, I drove into Dublin on a Friday afternoon, paid 10 Euro a day to have it parked and then drove it to the airport on Sunday morning.
If I have my druthers, I will NEVER do either one, again. In '07, we stayed in Swords (out of the city) and took the DART in and out. That wasn't TOO bad -- though finding parking near the DART was tricky -- and illegally parking gets you 'BOOTED', until you pay the 100 EURO fine!!!
Dublin streets are a twisted morass of one-way, conjested and oddly routed, maze-worthy lanes to any but the experienced residents. And- judging by what I've seen and heard - not even to ALL, of them! Parking is either non-existant or exhorbinately expensive.
In short, unless you positively, absolutely MUST have a car available, you would be well served to be rid of it - long before you ever catch sight of the Liffy.

We spent three nights in Dublin at the end of our trip in September. We returned our rental car to the airport then caught a taxi into town, think it cost about 26 euro, and was well worth having a hassle free trip to our hotel. There were a lot of roadworks which only would have added to the problems that Bob mentions above. If you stay somewhere in central Dublin, a lot of places are within walking distance, and the hop on/hop off bus tour takes you to those a little further away. We stayed at the Brooks Hotel (in Drury St I think) and it was a comfortable walk to Trinity College, St Stephen's Green, great shopping, Temple Bar, O'Connell St, and others. We then caught a taxi on our last day back out to the airport, door to door. Only way to go!
One more vote for no car in Dublin. Makes little sense to raise your stress level that high while you are on vacation! Better to get it turned in before you attempt to see this city, and you'll enjoy yourself immensely.
I echo what Bit said about taking a taxi to the airport. Worth the money to not have the worries as you are getting ready to leave the country.
