My husband and I are planning our second trip to Ireland in late May / early June. I'm trying to find an open jaw flight from SD to Dublin, returning through Shannon. When I use travel sites such as Orbitz, the open jaw flights cost more than the flights arriving and departing from the same city. I thought there would be no extra charge. The Aer Lingus site won't even let me do an open jaw flight from San Diego.
Does anyone have any suggestions or perhaps I am doing something wrong?
I can't make any promises about the cost, but I like to use www.kayak.com as it compares all of the sites and gives you the best fare. It even provides a link directly to the site that has the lowest fares.
I have tried Kayak and like it. The problem is that even on Kayak, if I search for open jaw, the airfare is about $80 more than if I don't. Even flying the same days and the same airline. For instance, I found a fare RT between SD and Shannon for $540 on USAIR; if I change the parameters to arrive in Dublin and leave Shannon the price jumps to $627on USAIR.
I seem to remember seeing on this site or somewhere, that the fare should be the same. Maybe I'm wrong??
I'm trying to remember how I found ours... Maybe Kayak or Sidestep? I do remember that whichever one it was, they made me sign in to have "multi-city" choices. Continental had the lowest costs for us from Chicago, and, as you suggested the cost priced out the same whether we used the same airport or not so we are going into Dublin and leaving from Shannon.
As an experiment, I just ran a Mutli-City through Orbitz (using May dates) and came out with a phenomenal fare on US Airways ($396!!) from San Diego to Dublin and returning from Shannon 2 weeks later. I'm thinking US Airways must be having a big sale right now because the other numbers were over $700, so you might want to check their web site directly. I'm sure results will vary by dates (I think mid-week flights are usually lower) but it's a place to start.
It is difficult to know why you are getting extra costs associated with open jaw flights. It could be the booking engine, could be extra charges by airlines, or something else. I know that when I am searching for a car the rates change hourly. Sometimes deleting the cookies from my computer starts the search off fresh and gives me comepletly different prices.
All I can say is keep at it. You might also check with a travel agent. Sometimes having a person searching for you is of benefit.
Though I often use travel consolidators such as Orbitz & AirGorilla for travel within the United States & Canada, I find that most of the time, when booking international flights, it is cheaper to go through the airline site directly.
For example, I checked Orbitz, Expedia, Kayak & AirGorilla for airfares, open jawed, into Dublin & out of Shannon for early May. Then, hearing of a deal on Continental, I checked Continental's site. I wound up booking through Continental at an unbelievable rate out of Phoenix into Dublin and departing Shannon back to Phoenix.
A lot will depend on your dates, with some airlines, as their specials run out at the end of May. Usingthe Continental.com site, I am showing a RT fare of $763.50 per person, taxes & fees included, from San Diego to Dublin & returning through Shannon. I used the dates of May 22 & June 7.
Using those same dates and the USairways.com site, I found RT air, taxes & fees included, for $593.50 per person.
Now for a good laugh, I saw SD & immediately checked flights in and out of Rapid City, South Dakota. It didn't occur to me that you meant San Diego.

Bit, that reminds me of the time I was so excited that South Dakota State University was playing football on national television (husband got his Masters' at SDSU and we got our first two daughters while living in Brookings) and it turned out to be San Diego State. Sigh......
I was not able to find the $396 price. We booked with AA and got RT for $610. That's the best I could find for the last week of May/first week of June.
We will have two weeks and plan to see the southern half of the island. We visited the northern half in 2006 and loved it. We really want to go back to Donegal, but will save that for another trip.
Places we are thinking of see: Dingle, Cork, the Burren. Also want to play some golf, but at courses that won't break the bank. I'm thinking also of returning to North Leitrim, where my grandmother was born, but that may have to wait for the next trip too.
I am glad to hear you got your airfares. I suppose they only sell so many at the deeply discounted price. Sorry you didn't get in on that. But still not too bad.
Try this site for golf: http://www.gui.ie/welcome.asp There are plenty of "local" clubs that cost less. Last year there were some websites that had special offers on them. I will see if I can find them.
Thanks for the website. And I would really appreciate special offers for golf. I've run across some courses that we could afford. We are really not interested in paying hundreds of dollars - especially considering what a bad golfer I am.
I am also trying to figure out what size car to rent that will accomodate our clubs. We considered renting, but I really can't play with full size rentals. That means we will have to lug the clubs around. Sounds like fun, huh?
