I wish that I had come upon this site a few months ago! We will be in Ireland in May after a cruise trip that ends in Dublin. My husband and I were in Ireland with our whole family in 1990 (how time flies!!) and on that trip we went from Dublin to Galway and then a big loop south and around back to Dublin hitting the usual popular places.
This time we would like to go mainly north. I have made up an itinerary and have made reservations but would like your input to see if you think I have overestimated things timewise etc.
Day one...disembark ship (will have seen Dublin the day before) rent car and drive to Salthill stay at Marless House 3 nights
Day 2- Drive the Burren and Cliffs of Moher (last trip we missed the most famous rock formation and my husband would not backtrack 18 miles:) and then the Cliffs were fogged in! So want a "do-over' on that day!
Day 3 - Drive to Rossaveal for trip to Aran Islands
Day 4- Drive from Salthill to Collooney to stay at Markree Castle two nights...anything we should not miss on this drive (don't want to go to Connemara, Cong etc as we have done that)...have never been near Sligo before.
Day 5- Genealogy day!! My husband's ancestor came from Co Leitrim in 1879 to Boston. Have corresponded with the Heritage Centre which is in Ballinamore ...they think ancestor came from townland of Lisgorman. So need to go to these two places and hopefully also church associated with baptism which they found...and back to Collooney for night. Not at all sure how much traveling this will entail.
Day 6- Drive from Collooney to Portrush with this plan: Want to get the 9:30 tour of Belleek factory Then......probably drive to Derry to do the 2 p.m. tour of the walls. ??Wish I could go the Ulster Folk Museum?? Which one should I skip? Would it be too much to go the Folk Museum and then on to Derry and then to Portrush? How long does the Folk Museum usually take. Looks like the last tour of the walls of Derry is 2 pm.?Do people do the walls without a tour? I know it is a matter of preference, but do you have any opinions on this?
I feel that I should probably just go to Derry so as not to make it too long of a day? How long from Derry to Portrush? Stay at Harbor Heights in Portrush ...our daughter stayed there a few years ago.....any input on that, or is there a great place to stay? i am not locked into this one.
Day 7 - Giants Causeway, Dunluce Castle, Carrick a Rede bridge and maybe Bushmills - stay Portrush.
Day 8- This is the other day that I am unsure of!!! Would like to drive the Antrim Coast and then cut in to get to Belfast....take a taxi tour and THEN make it all the way down to Navan to stay at Bellintner House and be there by 7 p.m. Is this do-able? The reason that I want to get that far south is that we are actually leaving the next day.
Day 9- Tour Newgrange on first tour of day 10 a.m....could take 3 plus hours.....and then go to Dublin Airport to turn in car and leave on a 6 p.m. flight to Heathrow. I should be at the airport by 3 p.m., right? So what time would I have to be sure to leave the Newgrange area?
I would really appreciate any suggestions or input. I have already made deposits etc on all the accomodations with the exception of the place in Portrush so I am set on those....just want to know what I am in for with my timing:)
Welcome to my forum! As they say, better late than never.
Salthill to Sligo: Since you are taking the main road directly there there is not that much to see along the way. Instead you should see things in and around Sligo such as Parke's Castle, Rosses Point, Glencar Waterfall, etc.
On Day 6 I think you have too much planned. My personal opinion would be see Belleek and the Ulster American Folk Park. Skip Derry because by that time traffic will be building and you will just be sitting in traffic. It will take a few hours to properly see the folk park. If you have a real interest in immigration then you might even spend a good part of the day there. As far as walking the walls of Derry, you can do it on your own. But a tour is much more informative. Planning your trip is all about options. Choose what is most important to you and cross the others off your list.
Day 8 is doable if you get an early start. Ask at your lodgings about an early breakfast and head on off. You will mostly be driving a scenic route since you will have already seen the main sightseeing attractions.
On Day 9 get to Newgrange at opening time. Navan is a busy town so expect traffic in the morning. If you see Newgrange, Knowth and the center it will take 4 hours plus. You need to factor in lunch too. Dublin Airport is very busy and traffic can be horrendous around there so be sure to leave Newgrange no later than 2 pm. There are some back ways to the airport but you would probably get lost. Best to head toward Drogheda and get on the motorway south to the airport.
You have helped me tremendously!! Thank you so much! Yes...i am so interested in immigration and so I am going to take your advice and go to the Ulster American Folk Park and then play it by ear from there....maybe skipping Derry. I needed your nudge on that one!
I have written the Taxi tour in Belfast and have not heard back from them yet. Do you usually book ahead? I only wrote them when I wrote to you, so maybe they will still get back to me. Since we were driving along the Antrim coast to get there, I asked their advice about when to book a tour. We plan to get that early start as you suggested.
When I use that AA site, it says about 2 hours from Portrush to Belfast but not counting going along to Torr Head....so do you think it would be about 3-4 hours and if we left Portrush at 8 a.m. we could book a maybe 1 p.m. taxi tour?
We will be at Newgrange at opening...I had planned on that. A little nervous about getting to the airport but hopefully if we leave by 2 and take your advice on the route!
Instead of booking the taxi tour go directly to the tourist office in Belfast. There are many options for touring the city. They will be able to direct you to the right one and book it right there.
I definitely will do that....might take me awhile to get to it. We will be going on a Baltic Cruise for two weeks that will end in Dublin. That is what drew us to the Baltic Cruise...something that we have always wanted to do but with the BONUS of ending in Dublin! So we will be gone over three weeks....my husband just retired so it is nice to have this freedom!
Congratulations to your husband on his retirement! Mine took early retirement and loves it. Now we don't have restrictions on how long we can be away. The Baltic Cruise sounds delightful. We will definitely be patient waiting for your trip report.
