You have been so helpful in advice for my friend Rebecca's trip -- she and her husband are there now and having a great time, I'm sure!
I'd like to get an idea of driving time. We're staying at Adare Manor, flying into Shannon. Do you have an idea on how long it will take from the airport to Adare?
Also, our outbound flight is at the unseemingly hour of 6:15 a.m. from Shannon. Though our reservations at Adare Manor go through the night before we leave, do you recommend leaving there a day early and getting a place closer to the airport for our flight?
Thanks for any advice you have. We using lots of ideas you've given Rebecca for our itinerary -- thanks so much!
I can't answer your specific question about the driving time from Adare Manor, but I can tell you that the 35 miles per hour figure for driving time is too much in my opinion. I don't think that I averaged 25-30 miles per hour in some cases in mid September 08. Our last night, we had an early flight out of Shannon and we stayed at Bunratty Lodge. Mary is a great host and it is only about 15 minutes to the airport straight down the road from her lodging.
http://www.aaireland.ie/routes/default.asp ...can give you a very basic idea of travel times - doesn't take into account how fast you drive or how many times you pull over to take pictures or wander!
Hi Lynd, We have stayed in Adare Country House and at the Bunratty Lodge. For the time of day your plane is leaving I agree with noshot9 about staying your last night at Bunratty Lodge , Mary is so sweet and gives good directions as to where the lights are, locks are - to get out of the Lodge and she even brought us a muffin, if we wanted it, to have for breakfast on way to airport. She also will call the airport and check on you departure time. We have also stayed in the airport hotel, and I would hightly recommend it if you can find a room. If you have a car, you turn it in, in minutes, and the shuttle will take you back to the hotel, and relax. If you get to the hotel early enough I believe they have a dinner buffet. In the a.m. you simply pick up a cart in front of the hotel and walk 5 minutes to the airports front door. For the $100 ++ a night, believe me it was well worth it! Have a great time! I think aphillippe's idea will give you a good basic idea. youngka

I agree with noshot9, we often averaged closer to 25mph, rather than the 35mph often quoted. I think a person has to take into account night, and dusk or early dawn as well, when figuring how much territory you can cover; then throw in the weather. The only time we made anything approximating "American coverage" was when the road ( in our case the M8 Cork to Caisel) the weather (clear and sunny) and the timing (Sunday, off season, early afternoon) all came together. It was amazing when it happened, it was on the very day when we needed to cover the most ground. I doubt I could plan it, let alone pull it off like that, again. WC
I appreciate the other forum members answering you while I have been away from the forum for a few days.
I would estimate the drive from Adare to Shannon at that early morning hour would take about 30 minutes if you know the way. That is really not bad. Perhaps you could do a "dry run" so you know where you are going.
If you feel you should be closer, Bunratty Lodge is an excellent choice. The road right in front of the B&B goes directly to the airport. At that early hour probably 10 minutes.
As for the 35 mph rule, that is an "average". On some roads you will do 60 and others 20 but it all boils down to around 35 mph taking in the whole trip around Ireland.
