Laundry?

Getting down to the basics of packing!  Are there laundromats or laundry services available in the typical destination small towns?   I'm trying to do 2 weeks with just a carry-on size suitcase.

Most of the bigger towns will have laundry service where you drop off a load in the AM and pick it up in the afternoon.  Haven't seen too many 'Self-Serve place, though I'm sure they exist.

Would guess the fee for service runs about 10-20 Euro, washed, dried and folded.

Hope that helps,

Bob

Bob's info is on the spot. Most towns have at least one place that does laundry. Your accommodation hosts, the tourist office or even local shopkeepers can point you in the right direction. The service is priced by weight, so if you have a lot of jeans or heavy items, it will be on the higher end.

I saw one "American-style" self-service laundromat in Dublin once, but haven't seen others.

My experience has been that clothes are dried under very high heat at most laundries in Ireland, so if you have items you don't want shrunk or any delicate items, ask to not have those items dried or skip having those washed altogether.

Thanks! I can do a lot of hand washing but probably will need to use a service for some of the heavier things... I will ask our hosts about local services.

Hi Barb:

Even some of the small towns have a laundry drop off service. I found a nice one in Glengarriff last year and the price was reasonable. The big launderette in Kenmare has self service laundry, but vacation time is far too valuable in my opinion to spend it washing clothes. drop off service will usually take a day unless you try at the end of the week.

Is there any chance that these B&B's will allow you to use their laundry facilities so that you can wash small loads on your own?

Well, I've had it happen, but I wouldn't bank on it. Energy costs in Ireland are exorbitant, laundry is usually in the private area of the home and foks running those businesses are busy enough to keep them running. If you ask where the nearest landerette is, it's possible that you will get an offer. It's is certainly not a service that you see offered much if at all.

Bill,

Thanks for the advice.   Only 10 days until departure!! I am so glad that I found this forum. It has been my main source of info. Thanks, Michele and all of the others out there that have provided valuable pointers.

I've only used one laundrette in Ireland, one in Galway near the bay. The attitude was definitely, "We Do The Washing Here". It was 10E per load, and, as noted above they use hot water and a thorough dry. I sure didn't begrudge them the service they offered, it gave my party more time to see what we came so far to see. WC

BTW, let me know how the two weeks with one carry-on works. It has been a dream of mine to do that; Mrs. O'Malley disagrees with me whole-heartedly. WC

WC,

I had only carry-on for a month in Ireland. It does work but your wife will not be able to look like a fasion model on the trip. Mix and match using complimentary colors. Plan so that you are doing laundry on a weekday in a place that has facilities. If you are in that place for two days it works even better since you drop of the laundry in the morning and pick up later in the day after your sightseeing.

As for Irish dryers they can be tough on delicates. I have had more than one bra fried over the years and now tell launderettes not to put them in the dryer. I always air-dry delicates.

Michele you have a good point in separating out the hand wash first; then go to the laundrette with the "indestructables". I will pass on your info about the length of time one can go with carry-ons. Hope springs eternal. WC

Thanks, Michele.  I will definitely let all of you know how the trip goes.  I'm not very fond of journaling, but I may have to give it a shot for this trip.  Plan on taking plenty pictures and sharing the stories behind them.

Rhett,

Let your camera be your journal. Take photos of anything and everything. You will be surprised at how something very common can turn out to be your favorite photo of the trip. Like the milk cans I photographed a few years ago. When you look at your photos it will bring everything to mind again.

Have fun!

Michele
