Connemara

What is the best way to visit Connemara?  It is my first time to Ireland and I will be spending a coupe of days in Galway and would like to see Connemara.  Would rather not do a bus tour, if at all possible.
Thanks,
Dawn

Hi Dawn:

Welcome to the forum. I've been absent myself here for a while but never lose interest in the place.

Will you be driving at any point on the trip? If so, I've got a number of suggestions for driving routes and options. Bus tours are the most prevelant version but there is a company that does jeep tours which could be pretty crazy. All I saw for them was a phone #. 091 550871

Let us know what your ideas are for getting around Ireland. BTW, I saw you were from the Denver as am I. The crazy Irish band I built plays around the area. I can let you know when we are making some noise out there.

I would rather not have a car while I am in Ireland.  I saw a hiking/walking trip that sounded interesting.

Let me know when you're in the area.  Denver is a great place to live!!

Dawn,

Welcome to my forum. If you don't have a car a bus tour might be your best option. If money is no object then you can certainly hire a hackney cab or taxi for a day to drive you around. I suggest you ask at the tourist office when you are in Galway as they will have all the latest info on tours.

In no particular order, as I have NO personal experience with any (we always self-drive), here is a list of SOME of the tour options available via a cursory Google Search:

Bus tours:
http://www.lallytours.com/

http://www.hostelworld.com/tours/ireland/galway/healy-connemara-&-galway-bay-10am-tour

http://www.arandirect.com/tours.php

Biking/Walking tours:

http://www.cyclingsafaris.com/galway.html

Taxi tour:

My guess would be that the bus tours would be the most economical.

Hope this helps,

Bob

Dear Dawn,

While Michele is on the road, I will step in with a tidbit of info for you. I think this is the link you are looking for for the walking/hiking trips around Connemara and the neighboring islands. Derry-born and now Connemara-settled archeologist Gerry MacCloskey, an old friend of mine when he worked in NY, runs the trips. See:

Otherwise, your best bet is a bus tour if you do not have a car.

Enjoy!
