arriving in Shannon for 5 night Irish vacation..Need help

So My wife and I are arriving at Shannon Airport on August 5th... We are going to a concert in Killarnary on August 7th..We have booked B&B for August 7th,8th and 9th. My question is where to go when we first arrive in Ireland? At first I was going to head toward Cashel but now I'm thinking of staying along the coast. Some thoughts are staying either in Ballybunion or driving to Dingle town for the first 2 days. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jim

Jim,

Are you aware that you can do Dingle as a day trip from Killarney? It is only about 1 1/2 hours from Shannon to Killarney on good roads. Perhaps you should spend your time in Killarney with your last night in Ennis (per your other post).

Michele, Thanks for the quick reply. We have already booked nights 3 and 4 just outside Killarney. We plan to visit Kenmare,Beara Penisula, and Lakes of Killarney,Gap of Dunloe, maybe Muckross House on Friday and Saturday and head for Ennis on Sunday(Flying out Monday @ noon. That is why I was thinking maybe it would be wise to see Dingle Peninsula first, but as you can tell by my posts I'm open to any ideas that would make more sense. We really don't want to make Killarney our base for all 4 days in that part of country. If you were getting off a plane in Shannon at 9:00A.M. on a Wednesday where would you head first????? Thank you so much for all you do for all of us....Jim

The Gap of Dunle tour runs from about 10 AM to 5 PM, so it will 'use up' the better part of one day, leaving little time for Ross Castle and/or the Muckross House offerings.

Kenmare can be combined with the Beara trip.  DO be sure to visit the Stone Circle, just a moderate walk, or really short drive from the Square -- it is WELL worth some time.

I would think that Ballybunion would be more like a TWO hour drive.  Dingle would be three or three and one half.  Do you think you would be up for that after an overnight flight?  I HAVE done THAT (and more) but I'm a glutton for punishment.  You will want to make lots of stops to stretch and keep yourself alert.  Coming from Limerick, Adare makes a good interim spot.  You could also route through Ennis and take the Ferry from Kilimer to Tarbert.

If you DO decide to 'Push On' to Dingle, I STRONGLY urge you to book two days there, due to your likely state upon arrival the first day.  :sick

Michele's HIGHLY rated B&B at Castlegregory, The Shores    http://www.theshorescountryhouse.com/     , might be a compromise SPLURGE -- particularly if you could arrainge for dinner.  biggrin

Jim,

In my other post to you I suggested your first two days in Dingle. The Shores Country House that Bob mentioned is lovely and dinner is superb. However, it is not right in Dingle town. It is in a rural area on the north shore of the peninsula. It all depends on what your needs are.

There are many wonderful places to stay in Dingle. Let us know if you need more suggestions.
