Hello All. I am a new member and am excited to read all the posts. I have read a few and have found some great tips.
My husband and I are travelling from Ontario, Canada on the 18th of June and returning on July 9. We are visiting my son who has lived in Ireland for approx 6 years.
We are flying from Dublin Airport to London Gatwick on the 23rd , returning on the 27th.
We would like to rent a vehicle from June 29 to July 9. My question is will a car rental agency accept a Canadian Drivers License? Does anyone have any tips on where to rent for a reasonable rate. Do you advise getting extra insurance. I have looked into this but it is VERY expensive to get extra coverage.
Does anyone have any advice on driving through the countryside for a 2 or 3 day trip, perhaps staying at a B&B?
I am so excited. However, I am concerned as I a require a walker to get around so as you can imagine, this has an impact on what we can do.
Welcome to my forum! You have found the place to get all your questions answered. Let's take them one at a time.
Will a car rental agency accept a Canadian Drivers License? * Yes, a car rental company will accept your license for driving in Ireland.
Does anyone have any tips on where to rent for a reasonable rate. * I usually use Kemwel. They will meet any other car rental company's price. Go to my Car page for more info and to get prices.
Do you advise getting extra insurance. I have looked into this but it is VERY expensive to get extra coverage. * Your credit card may actually cover insurance in Ireland. Read my Car page for more info. If your credit card does not cover insurance you should get at a minimum CDW coverage. CDW will have a deductible. If you cannot afford to pay the deductible of $1,000 or more if you have an accident, you should purchase Super CDW or look into getting it through Insurance4CarHire.com
Does anyone have any advice on driving through the countryside for a 2 or 3 day trip, perhaps staying at a B&B? * Yes, we have lots of advice but you will have to be more specific and tell us more. Where will you be traveling from? Where do you want to go? I have recommended accommodations on my Lodgings page.
Since you use a walker you will have to choose activities and lodgings carefully. I assume that you cannot handle stairs? In that case you will need a ground floor room or a place with an elevator.
Give us some more details so we can help you with your plans.
As Michele says make sure to read the excellent Car Rental information on her website. It is interesting to note that while VISA in the USA does not offer CDW coverage some Canadian VISA cards do. My RBC Gold VISA and my MBNA Platinum both offer CDW coverage. You must pay the entire car rental with the card and only the card holder can rent the car and obtain coverage. Be sure to check with your Credit Card company and be prepared for possible resistance from the company in Ireland. I always take a copy of the Credit Card's 'guide to coverage' and that ends the argument - has never been a problem.
Thank You Stewh and Michele. Your advice was the ticket. After making many inquiries regarding CDW coverage, I found out that RBC Visa covered same.
My husband and I will be staying at my son's home in County Lusk, which is just north of Dublin. We will be renting a vehicle from June 29 to July 9 (excellent deal from Kemwel Michele). I was thinking about driving to Galway from Lusk as I'm advised that Cliffs of Moher are a must see. However, any other advice on what to see or where to go is also appreciated. We could probably take a 2-4 day trip but are flexible on how long to travel on the road for and therefore could extend this time frame if needed.
Although my walking is restricted, I can use my cane and am able to get up a flight of stairs, just as long as I'm not consistently having to climb stairs or walk distances.
I have been with my husband for 12 years now and we have never been on a trip so we are so excited.
Michele, this is an absolute excellent forum with a wealth of info on Ireland. I can't thank you enough.
Glad you got a good deal with Kemwel. Their prices are hard to beat. I am familiar with Lusk. You will be able to see Dublin and Malahide from there. If you are interested in ancient Ireland Newgrange is a must.
If you are only going to have the car for four days or so you might want to stick close to the east coast. Co. Wicklow just south of Dublin is lovely. Scenic mountain drives, Powerscourt Gardens, Glendalough Monastic Site. Riversdale B&B has ground floor rooms. Check my Lodgings page for a link.
