Two Last minute questions on converting euro's?

1.
Ok so my dad (who has never been either) has told me best to bring usd and convert at a Ireland bank for euro's? This is what his friends are telling him.

I have read best is atm...my bank charges 3%

Or I can have my bank give them to me today no fee?

Please let me know what is best...thanks!

2. Now my dad wants to go to cork...I was not planning on that but I guess he has a friend of a friend...is it a daytrip from killarney?

Thanks!
Colleen

ATM is the way to go. I just returned in June. There is no fee to use the ATM machines albeit your bank may charge a fee. I know it's hard to trump your dad - but I do believe you are correct on this one!

Tell your Dad you still respect his opinions, but on this subject he is wrong and you are right!!!  biggrin

Not even a debate -- the ATM is the way to go in Ireland.

Although your bank might not charge you a fee for the euros, they likely charge a higher rate - I'm afraid nothing is free.

If you feel more comfortable having some euros on you when you get there, by all means get some now; but I would rely on credit cards and ATMs to do the heavy lifting as you travel. They are convenient, competitive and safer than carrying lots of cash.

Cork can be a simple daytrip from Killarney. Is it Cork city or a place in County Cork? Realize that traffic in Cork city can be heavy and confusing at times. As for this friend of a friend thing, I wouldn't make a special trip in unless there are some solid plans made... I like Cork city, but adjusting your itinerary for something that might not happen wouldn't be worth the effort.

Colleen,

Take everyone's advice and use the ATM and credit cards. Even though they add fees they pass on to you a low commercial rate. If you exchanged dollars into euros in the US the rate would not be favorable.

Hey, why can't the "friend of a friend" come visit you in Killarney? Invite him or her to join you for lunch/tea/dinner or whatever. Then if they don't show you have not just made a 4-hour round trip and fought the Cork traffic.

Colleen,

You are just about set. Don't forget your passport, tickets, car contract, meds, ATM and credit cards. Then you are good to go. Actually if all else was lost and you had those essentials you could still have a good trip. wink
