B&B Shannon Airport

We have most of our itinerary lined up for lodging and sightseeing for our upcoming Ireland trip in August.  I will share it with you soon.     But first, I have yet to book the final 3 nights.  We depart Shannon for JFK at 11:35 AM on  Aug 21.   We are booked Aug 6-Aug 17 ( A coastal route including:  Galway, Westport, Donegal, and Sligo), with the 17th  at Gorteen.  We figure to wing-it on the 18th and 19th, both on B&B's and itinerary from Gorteen as we drift back southward towards Shannon, probably, but not necessarily, on an interior route (after Knock Shrine) which may include some of the following: Strokestown, Tuam, Roscommon, Athlone,  Athenry, and Ennis.  Looking for "must see" suggestions for those areas, as well as possible B&B's for both the 18th and 19th, and then a B&B that works for our final night...Bunratty?? or Ennis??  What time do you suggest that we drop the car, and how far ahead of our 11:35 AM flight do we need to be at the Shannon terminal?   Thanks Dan

My vote goes to Headly Court at Bunratty. We stayed there and it's just a short drive to the airport. However, when we got to Shannon and checked in, we were informed our flight was delayed until 2:00 pm. The bad news, we were over 24 hours getting home to California, the good news, they put us in business class from JFK to LAX., It helped. We got to the airport around 9 am that morning.

Since they have FINALLY (supposedly biggrin) instituted the US Custom Clearance scheme at shannon, I would think that between 8:30 and 9 PM would be about right.

Michele has some strong recommendations (and bargains) for Bunratty, if that sways your judgement...

Personally, I REALLY like Ennis, but it depends upon just what type of experience you're looking for for your last night.

Really liked the Famine Museum in Strokestown and am a BIG fan of Clonmacnoice.  You can also visit Yeat's Tower, enroute from Athlone to Ennis ...

The Lough Gur Drive and Ballina/Killaloe are very picturesque, as well.

Dan, a favorite of ours, and quite a few others, is Bunratty Lodge run by a very nice lady, Mary. You just can't go wrong. Very nice accommodations, wonderful breakfast and just a hop, skip and a jump to the airport. We stay every year with Mary because her place is so comfortable and beautiful! youngka

Dan,

If you have a car to return to the airport then I would go for arriving around 8:30. Ennis is perhaps 30 minutes from the airport. Bunratty about 10 -15 minutes. As the others have recommended you can't go wrong with either Bunratty Lodge or Headley Court. It is a straight shot to the airport (the road in front of both places goes directly to the airport).

Bob has given you some good things to do along the way. Go to my Lodgings page for places to stay. Or if you need a suggestion for a specific town, let us know. If you have my book then you will have lots of good places to choose from.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions! Of the 5 ireland websights that I visit each day, this one is my favorite!
Bob, I did notice that Lough Gur was south of Limmerick, and I decided I really didn't want to drive thru Limmerick. (That would be a possible stop for when we do the south side of Ireland again....silly me already thinking about the NEXT trip BEFORE we leave on this one! We missed Kilkenny and the area west of Cork on up to Ring of Berra 3 years ago.) I'll take another look at the map to Lough Derg!
We are also leaning toward Ennis accomodations for our final night, since we don't have a terribly early flight out of Shannon. I'ld hate to think we missed out on some good pub with Trad music on night 15, or is 14 in a row going to max out the "fun-meter"? Is it possible that one would have to come home, and go to work, to rest up from a vacation?
It looks like we will do the famine museum at Strokestown, since our ancestors left Ireland due to the famine. Also Clonmacoise is now on my list. It looks like we can do the Yeates tower on the way to Ennis.
I am concerned about the new developments with some car rental agencies and World Master Card. I got on the "National Car Rental" sight this morning, and all they said was that some extra charges could occur if you declined CDW. It did mention a 25 Euro charge, but wonder if there is more?

Dan,

Not too far from Thoor Ballylee (Yeats' tower) is Coole Park where he used to hang out. Kilmacduagh monastic site is in the area too and well worth seeing.

Michele,
I see you only have one "L" in your name! We recently lost a friend, and her name was Michele with one L. She said her mother spelled her name that way, so that she didn't have the word: he** in her name! Her last name was Boyle, maiden name McConnel and of course of Irish ancestry by heritage and by marriage.
On my complete itineray, I have penciled in on the trip from Sannon to Galway the following possible stops...for fresh air and to fight jet lag: Quin Abbey, Ennis walking tour, Eniis Franciscan Friary, Kimacdugh Round Tower, Coole Park, and Thor Ballylee. I know we won't be able to do all of that between noon and 6PM check-in time for our Galway B&B. What ever we don't get to on the way out of Shannon, we may have time to do on the way back in at the end of the trip. Dan

Dan,

You have plenty penciled in to your itinerary. You can always adjust and cross off as you go.

As for the Michele with one "L". My mother wanted a French name to go with my (then) last name. The only one she knew was old time movie actress Michele Morgan. Hence only one L.
