CDW in Ireland

After reading the "Sticky" about the charges, holds, deposits, and waiver fees for not taking the rental car company's CDW, I've almost resigned myself to paying for their CDW (at exorbitant rates even with the 1000 Euro deductible), rather than face the outrageous 2000 to 5000 Euro deposit charges.

Has anyone found a less punitive rate for CDW with one of the companies operating in Ireland?

If you re-read the sticky, you'll note that Dan Dooley   http://www.dooleycarrentals.com/index.html , while INITIALLY adopting the 2000 Euro DEPOSIT SCAM, has changed back to imposing a "HOLD', instead.

And while that DOES limit the amount of credit AVAILABLE to you, it does NOT involve any additional COST.

I've used Dooley the past two years.  They DO tend to keep an older fleet than most -- in '08, I rented an '05 Ford Focus, with about 60,000 Kilometers and in '09, I received an '06 that had 106,000 kilometers showing.  Nothing wrong with the cars, mind you -- just not shiney-new.  I think that's actually an advantage, though -- as I would imagine that they would tend to be less picky about minor dings and scratches .... biggrin biggrin

Had some tire trouble this last trip, which generally is NOT covered by anybody, though Michele has a link to Insurance4carhire, that DOES, I believe ...  In any, case, the tires were NOT an INHERENT Dooley problem -- just bad luck, on a BAD road ... hmm

If you call the Dooley office in Monmouth, NJ and pre-pay, you can even avoid the 'Foreign Transaction Fee' surcharge that MOST Credit Cards charge, as the fee is placed in dollars, IN THE USA.  Ask for the "Pat Preston" discount, as well.

The single, BEST thing about Dooley is that they have a, "No Suprises" -- TOTAL Price Policy, so that you will know, 'up-front' what your actual expense will be.

Car Hire in Ireland is a ROYAL Pain -- things change, practically DAILY.

Thanks for the clarification.

I'll see if my Gold Card offers the Ireland rental car coverage.

Since I'm new here, would you be Pat Preston?

No, I'm BOB.  Pat operates another web-site about Ireland, although I personally believe that Michele's is more Self-Drive friendlier.

And, just Friendlier, in general ... biggrin

Dennis,

Keep looking at my comments under the sticky post: Warning: Car Rental Rip-offs!! Some Require €2,000 - €15,000 Deposit to Decline CDW

I am updating it daily. It takes me time to look through the "fine print" and policies of each car rental company. I am also emailing them. It is hard to get a straight answer from them...or any answers at all.

As Bob said Dan Dooley will accept your credit card's CDW (if you have the proper one to cover you). They have a "hold" of 2,000 euro on the card but not an actual charge if the car is returned undamaged.

I am currently writing letters to all the agencies I can think of about the current car rental situation. The more letters they get the more they will pay attention to the situation.
