We then will travel to Ireland to experience the historic sites of Ireland that we will have spent time reading about and discussing in class.  Join us as we soak up the magic of Joyce and Connollys Dublin as well as the breathtaking scenery and quaint villages along the way to the North.  The trip to the North will feature stops in Derry (Mr. Leons hometown) and Belfast where the wounds from the Modern Troubles are still fresh. Yet we will see that both cities are experiencing a renaissance."

The dates of travel will be 3/26/2010--4/5/2010.  Minus travel days that gives us 9 days in Ireland.  While the trip should have a historical/political bent (as for possible locations to visit), I also want the students to appreciate the beauty and magic of Ireland (for instance a day trip to the Aran Islands would be wonderful).  I imagine we will fly from NYC to Dublin where the journey will begin. At this very early stage, here's what we have:

Dublin (2 days)

Galway(1-2 days depending on if we do the trip to the Aran Islands)

Derry(1-2 days)

Belfast(1 day)

So, as you can see, we are in the very early stages.  There is a great deal of opportunity between Galway and Derry.  Any suggestions?  Also, if anyone could offer up specific places of interest in Dublin, Galway, and Belfast that would be fantastic.  As for Derry, it is my hometown and I am very familiar with it, so there, we are in great shape.  My family in Derry is arranging a visit with Martin McGuinness (Fingers crossed, we will be able to meet with Adams too).  We still have to arrange with leaders of the other parties involved. We are probably going to use Explorica to plan/organize the trip.  If anyone knows of a better alternative to Explorica, I would love to read your suggestions.

The group:  We are a party of 30 (27 high school students and 3 teachers).

Thank you very much for your help.

Sean

Sean, first of all could you check what you wrote and clear out all that we can't read by editing your posting? On the upper corner of your posting click on "quote" and the screen will re set so you can clear up what we can't read.......THANKS

If you haven't already done so, be sure and get the neat map of the Historical sites that we picked up at a tourist office. Someone who writes on your posting may know if you can get this folder at the airport -- it is plastic coated and gives you many ideas......A day on the Aran Islands would be a must, for me, because I loved it so much this year. We were there three nites and that wasn't enough. Once you reach the island, you can go by Van/s and take a total tour on Inis Mor (approx. 5 euros/1 way per person). We find it easier to fly into Shannon -- because of the larger city you have to deal with in Dublin. Also, Derry is North of Shannon and a straighter, less time involved, route.

There will be a lot of suggestions about what to see in between the places you are planning on travelling too also. Places will be mentioned for B&B's, in case you haven't checked any yet.  Giant's Causeway along the coast NE from Derry, as you loop around the coast to Belfast.....then you could fly home out of Dublin. It is really good you have the time to map this out and get all kinds of ideas. GOOD LUCK and have fun planning......youngka   You may get much better ideas than I have given, more experienced travellers than I.  Michele will be a big help -- she runs this forum.....smile

Sean,

Welcome to my forum. If you pasted a document into the reply box it came across as thousands of different fonts and is unreadable. If it is your plan for the tour you will have to deciper it. The only thing I got out of it was "Modern Irish History through Literature, Film, and Music" and Yeats.

Are you one of the teachers or a student? I would think that the students should explore and discover what they want to see in the cities mentioned and how they relate to their studies. That would be an excellent assignment and learning experience. They would actually have to read books and search the Internet themselves to learn about where they are going and what they want to see. It might be a better plan than a spoon-fed trip. Of course it depends on how old the students are. There is a big difference between 4th grade and college.

You also mentioned the political scene in Northern Ireland. Is that an aspect of the trip too? If so, you are covering a lot in 9 days. There was a mention of film and music. How will that slot into your trip? Perhaps a narrower focus will suit your short time better?

First you need to focus on your theme. Then you need to gather the info to support it. Once you do that you can map out an itinerary that will follow through with the class and its goal.

Since you are from Derry you know that there is a great deal of natural beauty in Northern Ireland. Had you thought of just concentrating on No. Ireland and Dublin for your short time? Galway seems the odd man out in what you have told me so far although the Aran Islands have associations with Synge.

It seems an interesting project. But you will want to move on it quickly. Student tours such as you are proposing take lots of time and planning. The details, logistics, reservations, etc. have to be in place well before departure date. I suggest you contact the company you want to use immediately.

When you are able to give more info, we will be happy to assist.

Michele
