Restaurant recommendations for Dublin, Kilkenny, and Sligo

I'm looking for some good restaurants to eat at as I am going on a nine day tour of Ireland in a few days. Price is not a huge concern, though I certainly don't want to spend too much. I am interested in traditional Irish food (corned beef, Irish stew, shepherd's pie, etc.) as well as steak (I heard they have very good meat) and possibly contemporary. I figure I will eat at a bar or two, so those are places where I will get some traditional food, but I wanted to go to some restaurants as well (unless there is a particular pub that has good food). I don't have a whole lot of time to explore, so I just want a few can't miss locations in each place. The only recommendations I have received thus far are The Winding Stair and the Boxty House in Dublin. Thanks for any help.

If you are headed to Sligo, will you be traveling the N17 through Tubbercurry? If so, in downtown Tubbercurry, across the street from Murphy's Hotel is Kilronans Pub. They had an "Irish Night" there in July and Aug on Thursdays (not sure about Sept or later) and they served complimentary samples of traditional Irish food. I would assume that this type of food is all available on their regular pub menu, but can't say for sure as we were well satisfied for our evening meal after eating the samples!  It was delicious food!  It included, of course, mashed potatoes, potato pancakes(thin and thick) BBQ ribs and Chicken, Porter cake, and irish bread and home churrned butter. It might be worth checking out, if you are close to that area for lunch or dinner!

csice,

We recommended some good places in your last post: http://www.activeboard.com/forum.spark?aBID=65127&p=3&topicID=29053471 and Dan has added the list too.

Ireland also has excellent seafood. If you like it you can hardly go wrong with salmon, prawns, mussles, oysters, etc.

In Dublin try Shanahan's for steaks, Chapter One, Thornton's.

You can also ask either the concerige at your hotel or hosts at B&Bs and guesthouses for recommendations.

That and the previous reply gives you many options. Hope you enjoy the food in Ireland.

I always enjoy a stop at Langton's in Kilkenny and try to get seated in the old Victorian dining section... menu is mostly contemporary, but they usually have some traditional fare tucked in for good measure.

Not to contradict, but I was not impressed by Langton's on either visit I made. The first visit, granted, was years ago (2002) and we promptly left, as it was smoke-filled. That's no longer a problem, but we went in 2006 and the food was rather average hotel-style food. We had a much better dinner of sandwiches at Marble City, located just south of the castle in a little alleyway, across from Dame Kyteler's Inn (where they had trad music :) )

Oh, and on the flip side - in 2002 we ate twice at Breathnach's (also in Kilkenny) and quite enjoyed it - modern Irish, good steaks. However, our landlady at Alcantra warned us that it was no longer as good, so we avoided it the last trip. It could have still been good, but we didn't try.

We really enjoyed the Marble City bar in Kilkenny - had apple celery soup (sounds awful but was very good) and a sandwich for lunch. Nothing fancy but very tasty

Pam,

Actually that soup sounds good. I always have good food at the Marble City Bar too. How was Kilkenny and the weather?

Hi Csice!
You definitely need to go to the Brazen Head on Dublin 8. Not only they serve good Irish food but also it happens to be the oldest pub in Ireland! Enjoy :)
