We do have a world mastercard and plan to use it for the car rental. We orginally planned this trip for last March but had to reschedule due to family illness. Wow - I have read the postings and am just in shock. Today I went on Dooley website and called their US telephone number. She informed me they would actually charge our MC $3000 if we waive CDW - even when we get the credit back it will still cost us at least $90 because of our credit car company foreign exchange fee
So I have been looking for various options. I did call Hertz and was told they would put a hold on the card but would not charge it - that is fine - but does not agree with their website and she would not provide me with that in writing.
I did find competitive rates at both of the above - and did not see where they would actually process a charge but would instead place a hold on account for the amount. But I have read nothing about either of these. Can anyone help?
Also would appreciate any recent stories of car rentals in Ireland
I rented very recently from Dooley and there was a 1,000 euro HOLD not charge put on my credit card. It was at Dublin Airport. Their website says a 2,000 euro hold but I was pleasantly surprised at the airport that it was half.
As for the other companies, call them and ask. That is the only way to find out with many of them. Then get it in writing!
Hi Pam In Spring of 2009 we rented a car through Rentacarireland.com: I was able to get a very good rate. I was able to waive CDW coverage with a Credit Card. Rentacarireland.com is, like Kemwel, a car rental re-seller but they deal with only Hertz, so if you use them you will be dealing with Hertz in Ireland. Not everyone has been pleased with Hertz in Ireland but I have not had any problems. You are right to be careful and ask lots of questions, it seems it is getting more difficult to get straight answers. Good luck!! Stewart
Did you make your car reservation on the Dan Dooley website or did you call and talk to a reservations agent? Seven weeks to go and trying to tie up all of the loose ends.

Hi - I rented through Kemwel and my car was from Eurocar (I may have misspelled their names). I picked up in Dublin and dropped off in Shannon. I was surprised by some extra fees and my credit card company reversed them because Eurocar couldn't prove what they were for. It was close to $300! It was frustrating getting calls from them, threatening collections...
If I had to do it over again I would chose an American based company to rent from, if there is one...
I believe the company you delt with was Europcar. I had similar $375 charges on my credit card that were bogus. So far I have only gotten about half of it refunded. The problem with Europcar is that you never know who is going to end up being under their umbrella. For me, it happened to be "National Car Rental". I don't know how you can prevent this from happening, unless you know of and use companies that are totally independent, and don't use consolidators. Irish Car Rentals is also affiliated with them, and 1 other company listed on the sign above their booth at Shannon...I don't recall which one. Dan
You are correct that the consolidators book you with the lowest rate car company. I have heard of some people calling to have the company changed because they had dealt with them previously didn't like them.
Renting a car in Ireland is getting more and more difficult. Most say it is the worst part of the whole trip.
Just got back and wanted to report on car rental. We rented an economy (Ford Fiesta) through carrentals.com and they placed us with Enterprise at Dublin Airport. Total cost of car for 15 days was right at $300 which I found to be very reasonable. We did have to pay a deposit of 250 euros which they refunded already.
We were able to waive the CDW as we did have a World Mastercard and they looked at the documentation and said that was fine. The people were very nice and accomodating at Enterprise. When we returned the car the night before our flight, the van driver took us back to our hotel.
I will admit to being nervous the whole time though as the roads are quite narrow and bordered by stone walls in many places. Fortunately we were able to avoid any scrapes but I can understand how easy it would be to scratch a car or worse there.
