HELP!!!!!! To say I am overwhelmed would be an understatement! We were to go to Ireland with a very knowledgable friend in September of 2001 but after the 11th, we cancelled our trip. So, we promised our son a trip to Ireland as a graduation present and I want to order your book to at least have a starting point, but I see a new edition is due out before our trip (May 2010) and I don't know if I should wait. After looking at this site, I realize I don't even know what I want to see or where to go. I haven't a clue what it will cost, how long will make for a good trip, now I am terrified of car rentals although that was what we thought we wanted... Anyway, how much does the book change each year? Thanks!
Welcome to my forum! You have found the right place for planning your trip to Ireland. I recently started my own Blog and the first article is How Much Does a Trip to Ireland Cost? I think it will be a good starting point for you. Once you read it you will know how to estimate the cost of a trip.
The new edition of my book comes out in March of each year. However, since you are departing in May (my favorite month in Ireland) I suggest you get the current edition of my book now. That way you can read it and prepare for your trip. Most likely once you have read through it, you will have a good idea of where you want to go and what you want to see. I don't do a complete rewrite each year. It is mainly adding new accommodations, restaurants, etc. and deleting those that have changed (for the worse) or closed. And of course I update any costs, phone numbers, websites, emails that have changed. But you can get any updates you need right here on the forum.
You probably read the post on car rentals. Don't be terrified. The reason I started it was so that people could be informed. I think it is best to have all the knowledge of a situation you can. Then you can make an informed decision.
If you can spend two or three weeks in Ireland it would be ideal. Even then, you won't see everything. But if you can only get away for a week you will be able to get a nice appetizer of Ireland.
We at the forum are here to help. Planning a trip is a process that takes time. I'm sure you will have lots of questions so feel free to ask. Looking forward to helping with your trip.
I will look for the check shortly and will get the book right off to you.
I'm glad you found your way here. You will find our little community helpful and kind. We love sharing our love of Ireland with others. This quote sums up the attitude on my forum:
"If you have knowledge, let others light their candles in it."
Hi ahhgee...Well, since you've found this site you have a good start to planning your trip. I had Michele put together my trip last year and it was seamless...I would highly recommend her deluxe trip planning services...
Driving in Ireland is fine...you just need to take your time and have a good co-pilot...
My first trip to Ireland consisted of 16 days and driving over 1000 miles. It was ideal to see everything we wanted to see...
All the B&B's we stayed at were incredibly affordable...and it was good to fill up on Breakfast and eat light the rest of the day...have one or two great dinners. Pick up food at grocery stores for a picnic or snack.
The best part of Ireland is the people so whatever you do or wherever you go you'll be surrounded by the people which will make your trip great!
