I'm trying to decide where to base ourselves for the two nights before we drop off our rental car in Dublin, a location that would be between Kilkenny and Dublin City.
I would like to be a short drive from a historical home like Powerscourt or Russborough , drive through the Wicklow Mountains stopping at Glendalough and in the evening walk along a coastal promenade and still have less than an hour to drive to the airport for a drop off around 10 am.
I am considering either Bray or Greystones for these reasons.
I read that Greystones Harbor is in the midst of a multi-million dollar harbor reconstruction. I am wondering if its a much less desireable location during this ongoing construction period.
Would there be another town along the water that you could suggest or should I give up trying to find an evening seaside promenade for our September stay?
I'd rather stay in a B&B than a hotel and I'd like to be in a town rather than an isolated location.
Thank you for any comments or suggestions you might have for me. Deborah
Dun Laoghaire has lots of traffic but it has the ocean and promenade you wanted. How about Glendalough? It doesn't have an ocean but it does have two lovely lakes you can walk along, plus rivers and a waterfall. Once it closes for the day the locals go walking through the park so they can enjoy it tourist-free. That's where I would stay.
Do you have to be at the airport at 10 am or is your flight at 10? Dublin Airport is a zoo and suggests 3 hour check-in before transalantic flights.
I set the 10 am time as a guestimate for the return of our rental car. I'll haven't done the rental yet but we do have an early arrival and will drive up to Smarmore directly from the airport. Using the 24 hour rental period I'm expecting to bring the car back in the morning to avoid an additional day charge.
It's good to know about the 3 hour check-in time recommended for Dublin when we leave. Thanks, Deborah
Just went to their Website -- that place looks amazing! And they have a small cottage that can also be rented for a week. That will be a place I will make note of next time I am near there.
Michele, thanks for recommending the Riversdale B&B and of course I mentioned your name when I requested information. We are booked there for the two nights before we go to Dublin.
It looks so lovely and peaceful, the perfect setting before we finish our trip in busy Dublin. Even having so many days for a first trip I know I'm going to want to stay longer at each of the B&B's I've selected. Thanks again for the help, Deborah
Glad you are staying at Riversdale. The setting is lovely. If you are athletic you can cross the river in front of the B&B on stepping stones and hike right into Glendalough that way. Keep in mind that weekends in the area tend to be crowded. Instead of fighting the crowds, wait till late afternoon or early evening (or very early morning) to enjoy the more peaceful atmosphere. There is a vast difference in the ambiance of Glendalough without the crowds.
Last time I wanted to look at the cottage but it was booked so I couldn't intrude on those who were staying there. But if it is half as nice as the B&B it is a winner.
