I must go to Ireland! Geneaology calls....

I am starting to plan my Irish trip and just found this site. It's a great site. Thanks Michelle. I'm from Canada.

I have decided it will take me time to save my hard-earned money, which puts me in the Spring of 2011, which I think would be a good time to visit Ireland. I will be travelling as a single person.

My trip will basically be Geneaology-based in the small little village of Mitchelstown, not far from Cork City. It's about 4,500 people and I have researched some B & B's there, but never thought about renting a cottage for a week. I have no idea where the best place would be to stay. I like to live simply. The adventure itself is what it's all about.

I would like to stay there for one full week - or maybe 10 days. I'm armed with well-documented family information. This is where my family's roots are.

I'm about staying put and being happy doing this and would really not want to rent a car to sightsee on my own. I am not comfortable renting a car. The trip would be all about staying in Mitchelstown and perhaps reconnecting with family that I have yet to meet, if I get that lucky.

I just want to fly to the nearest airport (Cork City?) then get to Mitchelstown somehow and stay there. to continue my family research. I am very low-maintenance and do not wish to have fancy meals everynight. Maybe just once or twice! I would love to mix with the locals at a pub and I do love an Irish spirit here and there.

I want to explore this area exclusively on my own, by foot and have a trip that does not cost a fortune. It's more about getting back to the town itself where my family began as we know it.

I have no idea where to start. I am trying to budget and know the flight cost from Canada to Ireland, but that's about it. I am learning more and more from your site. I know I can do this on a budget and it will truly fulfill a lifelong dream.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Kelly,

Welcome to my forum. I have written an article How Much Does a Trip to Ireland Cost on my Blog. I think it will help you with saving up for your trip.

Most transatlantic flights arrive in either Shannon or Dublin. Shannon would be closer to Mitchelstown. The nearest you can get by train is either Limerick Junction (near Tipperary town) or Mallow. You could then get a bus to Mitchelstown. Go to my Transport  page for links to Irish rail and bus services. If you want to do some sightseeing by public transportation perhaps you should look into one of the combination passes.

That should get you started. Let us know if you need more help with your planning.

Michele

Thanks, Michele

Your website is very informative and thorough and is much appreciated. I chuckled a little, as I too was in an industry (home renovation) with just too many variables where people would just ask 'What will it cost?" I used to tell them in a jovial manner "Hmmm. try calling the local automobile dealer and ask them "How much is a car?" See what they say then.

All I know at this point is that I would like to do this trip on a shoestring budget, but I would want the comfort of having cushion money for unexpected or unanticipated costs. Again, I can liken it to home renovations in that there may always be unexpected surprises, so I will literally save double the amount that I think I can travel with.

I say right now that I would love to stay put in Mitchelstown, but I fear with the never-ending beauty of Ireland, I will be tempted to see more.

I also have the option of very accomodating friends, but they are located near Ballymena, which is a large distance from where I need to be. Our family history is in the South, but I have a warm welcome from friends in the North and I know they would have me in a heartbeat.

This has given me a start to begin my planning journey and the message forums are a huge help to me.

Keep up your good work!

The Mitcheltown Caves (heading in the direction of Cahir) are quite impressive.  That would be something to think about seeing while you are there.

Best regards,

The best self-catering cottage nearest to Mitchelstown would be Croughmore, as far as I am concerned. However, it might be a tad large for just one person. If you don't mind the extra space, it is the perfect spot.  Liam and Ann are the sweetest of folk! They would certainly make sure you are well and happy.

You might find that B&Bs are a better fit for you. Some B&Bs will offer you a weekly rate or discount your room for long stays. Just inquire when you book. I have previously enjoyed my stays with Mary O'Connell at Palm Lodge in Mitchelstown. She might offer a break for an extended stay. She takes credit cards, as well, which frees up your cash for other things.

I hope this helps you some.

Slan Beo (Take Care),

Bit

Kelly,

I kept getting emails asking how much a trip to Ireland cost. No mention of where in the world they lived, how long they would stay or whether they would stay in castles or hostels. It was virtually impossible to reply. That prompted me to write the article.

I think you have a good plan for your savings. Since you will be alone I agree with Bit that B&Bs might suit you best. There are not a great deal of them in Mitchelstown so Bit's suggestion of Palm Lodge is most welcome.

The temptation to go to Ballymena would have me on a train in a shot. It is very close to the Antrim coast - one of my favorites. Maybe you can add a couple of days so you can see your friends.
