We will be traveling from Dublin ( I know -flying into Shannon is better-but think it is a longer drive) up to Inishowen in September. Any suggestions of a route to take? We like to travel without a set plan--more adventours that way! We will have our own car and be on our own time. Also, are there any 'must sees' that you have to recommend? We like the rustic countryside vs the city. Thanks! Lighthouse fan
Are you planning on doing the drive all in one day or are you thinking of stopping along the way?
The most direct route is N2 north through Monaghan, A5 north to Derry, cross the border and you are on the gateway to Inishowen. If you want to avoid Derry you could veer off in Strabane, cross the border into Co. Donegal and continue north.
Right now we are thinking about catching afew hours of sleep in Dublin, we arive very early in the AM. Then getting our car and heading North. We will definately be stopping along the way, and likely will need to spend the night somewhere. We were going to try and not spend the night in NI and stay in the Republic along the edge. Now that may not work and we may need to spend a night in NI. We are very flexible and take the trip as we go at our own pace based upon how often we stop. This will be our third trip to Ireland , so I'm not too bad at the driving. We have been to NI before, so may not need to stop alot. Appreciate your feedback and any sites that we should not miss.
We plan to do the Inishowen 100 and then see parts of County Donegal as well. We are thinking of 5-7 days up here. Then I know we are crazy, but then we are headed to Dingle to see a friend. I know you have heard it before, but it is worth saying again....Your site is the BEST!!
Thanks for your kind comments. It is always nice to hear that the forum is appreciated.
Now that you have given me more info, I have a better idea of what you are doing. Have you ever visited the Enniskillen area before? If you take a route up through Cavan you might consider a night or two there on your way to Inishowen. There is a gem of a B&B outside Enniskillen called Abocurragh Farm. I think you would love it.
Michele- Yes we have been to Enniskillen and enjoyed that area. We may have to spend a night in NI, Which would be fine being my family orinigates there. We have not spent much time in Co. Down so may stop there along the way. We truly really love the adventure of take it as we go.
Since you have seen Enniskillen you should probably take the first route I gave you. Unless you decide to visit Down. I love Co. Down. There is so much to see and do there. Mount Stewart Gardens are spectacular. The Ards Peninsula is scenic. And of course there is Downpatrick with St. Patrick's Center and grave.
