JetBlue Bumped Us

We were all set, with JetBlue taking us from OAK to JFK at 8:00AM on May 12, then Aerlingus to SNN two hours later - a 14-hr day. Then JetBlue changed its schedule, and now we'll have a 12-hr layover in NY, so we're looking at a 24-hr trip.  Then at SNN, arriving at 6:00AM, we have two hours before our bus to Dingle, which takes another four hours. One option would be to get a b&b in Adare, if they'll take us that early. (Or pay for an extra night.)

Years ago, JFK used to have a VIP lounge, where you paid to get in, to fall into overstuffed chairs and couches. I can't find it online.

Suggestions? How comfortable are those Bus Eireann buses? Should we expect plastic seats or something with head rests?

Bronx,

How horrible. furious I am exhausted just reading about your journey. I have done trips like that in the past but it gets old fast. I have not traveled through JFK in some time and avoid it when I can. Have you looked at their website? Also, many airlines have lounges. You might be able to purchase a pass into one. Or if JetBlue has a lounge perhaps they will give you a free pass because they inconvenienced you.

Bus Eireann buses vary depending on routes. This page has some photos for you to look at: http://www.irishbuses.com/BusEireannRoute104.html

Bunratty B&Bs have been pretty empty lately with all the tourists flying through Dublin. You might consider an overnight there. The odds that there will be an empty room for you are probably good. You could make a few calls from the airport to see who can take you or just have the tourist office at the airport do it for a few euro. Then you could have a good nap, see Bunratty Castle & Folk Park, eat a nice dinner and back to sleep for the night.

There is a Lounge at JFK that is available to Aer Lingus Gold Circle Members on a 'Space Available' basis.  You have to be a member of the AL frequent flyer Program and have a minimum number of "Points".

However -- I just received a credit Card solicitation from Barclay's for an Aer Lingus branded, WORLD MASTERCARD with NO Annual Fee.

SUPPOSEDLY, possesion of the AL MasterCard grants admission to the Lounge -- REGARDLESS of the number of "Points".

Might be worth 'Checking Out' ????   confuse  confuse  confuse

Another option MIGHT be to see if Aer Lingus / Jet Blue can re-route you through Chicago, Washington or Boston any quicker ...

Can't HURT to ask ...

Chauffeur, even if we could get in free, from an online photo of those chairs, it doesn't  look like we could snooze. So we have booked Days Inn near JFK for $119. We'll stay from about 7AM until checkout time at Noon. Our Aer Lingus leaves at 6:30.

We looked into changing flights to O'Hare, Dulles, Newark, Atlanta, Boston. From OAK, nothing works for connecting to Aer Lingus in time. Next year we'll know to fly AL from SFO direct, one stop, either to SNN or DUB. To save a few bucks and a little time, I really outsmarted myself.

Would think that the hotel would PROBABLY allow a later check-out, seeing as you won't even be arriving until 7 AM ...

Again, it can't hurt to ask.

I do sympathize -- really.  Living where I do, in Florida, it really IS nearly a case of, "You Can't Get There From Here".  hmm hmm

My wife is a VERY anxious flier  --  You wouldn't believe how much extra WE have to pay to avoid what she considers excessive stop-overs and wait times!  furious  furious

I am very fortunate to be able to go non-stop to Ireland. Even if it is the dreaded Dublin Airport. For too many years I did 3 and 4 stops to get to Ireland. No fun and very exhausting.

I was shocked when recently the times on both of my flights were changed (the transat. on Continental and an Aer Lingus shuttle flight).  Fortunately, neither change is causing me a huge problem but in my ignorance I never realized that flight times were NOT firm and now I read about your change... no

Is this very common, then?  And can we dare hope that once the times have been changed they won't be fiddled with again?

Rosa,

It is very common for flights to be changed. I suggest you check on them frequently to make sure there are no problems.

The final solution to our problem mentioned above was to move our OAK - JFK flight back 24 hrs, instead of just twelve, and spend the night near JFK. It was our second change with JetBlue within 48 hrs, and they waived the $100 per ticket fee. I realize one has to be retired for that to work.

Bronx,

There are compensations for being retired! My husband is much more flexible now. With schedules, that is.
