Looking for advice on best way to do this! Hopefully we will have already accomplished Newgrange, Hill of Tara, Hill of Slane and Trim Castle, in the days before so those won't be on our list of stops. We'll be driving past those to head north. I imagine us getting up early to get on the road, stop at Mellifont Abbey and Monasterboice along the way, and then...? I once heard that C.S. Lewis said the Mountains of Mourne were what he always envisioned Narnia to be like. What's the best way to really enjoy our drive through that area as we make our way to Downpatrick for the night? Is it best to drive right through the mountainous area? Or drive along the coast?
Are there any 'must see' stops along the way? And what about Downpatrick, itself, once we get there?
There are two very different routes through the Mountains of Mourne. One goes along the coast and you are looking up at the mountains. With the other you drive through the mountains looking down at the ocean. They are both scenic - I guess it just depends on what viewpoint you like. The coastal route will take longer because going through the mountains is more of a straight shot.
There are forest walks and lakes up in the mountains (see website above). There is Dundrum Castle, Murlough National Nature Reserve, Tollymore Forest, Silent Valley, etc.
In Downpatrick is St. Patrick's grave, St. Patrick Center, Down Museum, Down Cathedral.
If you get the chance, stop in to the St. Patrick Centre in DownPatrick. If he doesn't greet you himself, ask for the director, Tim Campbell. Tell him Bit from Tucson sent you and send a large hug his way.
He is always one to show off his centre. We just hosted him here in Tucson at a Luncheon this past January. Patrick Dempsey has nothing on Dr. Tim.....LOL
There are places in Tollymore that would make ideal promo shots for Next Chapter. I wish I was tagging along with you! The Mourne Mountains are a Photographer's dream!
Can't agree with you more about Dr. Tim. I met him in Atlanta at a Tourism Ireland showing a few years ago. Met him again at the St. Patrick Center the next year. He is so enthustiastic and entertaining. A great guy.
Thanks for the links (I've already been clicking like crazy this afternoon!) and I will definitely ask for Dr. Tim. We had the St. Patrick Centre on our list of things to see--I'll make sure it stays at the top of the list.
We are assuredly looking for some great photo shots. What route would you suggest to fulfill our photography dreams in the Mountains of Mourne? :)
If you take the coastal route you could take some small roads up into the mountains too. But that will make a long day and I would suggest an early start. Let the weather determine it. If its foggy or really rainy take the coast road as the mountains will be socked in.
