cigarette lighter adapter

My husband and I will be traveling to Ireland from Chicago in September.  We are flying into Dublin and then heading west to County Clare.  I have a Garmin GPS with Ireland/UK maps that I would like to use, but am not sure whether I need a special adapter to use it in our rental car.  It runs off the cigarette lighter here in the U.S.  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

The lighter plugs are the same.
We used our Garmin with european maps,we were very pleased.

But-have a good paper map also.

Thanks, Susan! I feel much better since I spent $100 to update my Garmin.

nraiello,

Welcome to my forum. As Susan said the lighter plugs are compatible. Her advice to have a paper map is excellent. Ireland is building roads like crazy and they may not all be loaded into your GPS. So don't depend on it alone.

For other electrical items you may well need an adaptor and plug.

Thank you, Michele. Is there a good electrical adapter you recommend? We will bringing our iPod, digital camera, etc. which will all need to be recharged. Also, do you have any thoughts about cell phones? The ones we have unfortunately will not work in Ireland and I'm wondering if I should rent or speak to my cell provider. Thanks again!

Just purchase phones at the airport. They are also available in any mid-sized town. Last year they were about $49. Don't put yourself through that rigamarole of buying Ireland/UK SD cards from National Geographic or whoever. You won't save enough for the trouble.

As for adapters, google what you need, then visit a good hardware or electronics store. They cost about 20 bucks.

Correct plug adapters are available online, at Target, Walmart, Radio Shack, etc ...

They are Type 'G' as shown here:

Vodaphone lists Pay As You Go, or PrePaid Phones, complete with Sim and 5 Euro of Call Credit for as little as 39 Euro:

Other major players in Ireland are O2 and meteor.  I'm sure they have similar deals, too.

Nancy,

Many electronic items don't need the converter just the three prong plug that Bob sent you the email for. But you will have to look at the instructions that came with said items to be sure. Or if in doubt use the converter with the plug. Wal Mart has some inexpensive ones that work fine.
