We were supposed to be coming home from Ireland on Wednesday this week, but they have now closed Irish airspace for Tuesday! It looks like we were smart to cancel the entrire trip rather than going a week late!
This situation is every changing. It depends on what the volcano does and the weather/wind patterns. Today, Wed May 5, 2010 airspace over Northern Ireland is closed. The best thing to do if you have a flight coming up is keep up with the news alerts. We always try to keep you right up to date here. And you can click on the various links to get updates too.
Even though I think there's a silver lining in all of this (I mean, I suppose it's great that they are figuring out how to handle the air traffic when there's actually ash as opposed to just guessing at what they would/could do...) I'm sure hoping this volcano goes to sleep soon!
AND I'm hoping that the exchange rate stays this favorable (comparatively) even though I should feel guilty about that since it means there's still trouble over there...
I have been looking at the routes the planes are taking from the USA to Ireland. On some days they fly far north over Greenland and Iceland. On others they go south almost toward Spain. It depends on where the wind blows. But at least they are flying and avoiding the ash cloud. Just count on arriving late.
I hope the exchange rate gets even better. Wouldn't it be great if the euro and dollar were the same?
If it was a 1:1 I think I might stop breathing for just a second! haha! That would be fabulous! That would make even the more expensive B&B's (plus the single supplement for me) WITH the incredible breakfasts cheaper than most U.S. hotels with no food!
And if that happened I'd *probably* be hoping for a little ash so I could get stuck over there for a bit longer.
Changing flight paths- that is great news. I'm not very worried about the trip anymore. I finally 'let it go' and decided they'll have the kinks worked out by then so I'll get there one way or another. In fact, after planning this for so long I'm finally getting to where I'm more relaxed about the whole thing which is helping lighten my carry-on, as well! haha.
Maybe if this wasn't my first trip over I would have been a little more relaxed about it from the get go.
