Free rail travel in Ireland to Senior Tourists

I just got this via the 'moving to Ireland' newsletter.  Since I know there have been several questions about rail travel, and some of us are 'more experienced' in years, I thought I'd pass it on :)

FREE RAIL TRAVEL

One older friend tells me the only thing golden about "the golden years" is the colour of your pish.

Happily, he's wrong. A new Irish tourism initiative offers free rail travel passes to all overseas visitors aged 66 or older. You can travel anywhere in Ireland by rail with a "Golden Trekker" pass.

Some details. You can make reservations at the official tourism site - http://www.discoverireland.com - or sign up at any tourist information office in Ireland. The latter are located in every significant town.

The pass is NOT good for travel in Northern Ireland or on buses or Luas trams in Dublin. However, it is good for use on Dart (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) or commuter trains as well as all countrywide connections. You'll need to provide a passport or national identity card.

The trains often take scenic routes and the rolling stock has been upgraded significantly over the past year.

And! Every rail car has a toilet.

Christy,

Thanks. We had a discussion about this when the passes were first anounced. But it never hurts to bring it up again for newbies. I also have it on my "Hot News" page. An excellent deal!
