My wife and I are looking at a cottage near Portsalon or one near Clonmany. My fear is that Portsalon is much built up, with the landscape littered with new second homes. we say a bit of that last year staying on the Atlantic coast near Dungloe/Burtonport. Do you know the areas, and can you comment?
During the economic boom, there was an abundance of pop-up houses across Ireland, even the wilds of Donegal were affected by this blight.
Of the two, Clonmany, on the peninsula, would be the lesser. I loved my stays in and around Clonmany. There is so much to be seen within a short distance:
Glenevin Falls Straid Church Leenan Fort Carraic Brachaidhe Castle
The coastal drive alone is breathtaking.
Portsalon is considered a resort area. There is a beautiful stretch of beach and the caves to be explored. I enjoyed my stay there at Ardroe cottage. The Fanad peninsula is great for walkers. I have heard good things about Portsalon's Golf Club, as well.
I hope this helps you some. Much of Donegal is wild & rugged, no matter the pop-up houses. It is, I believe, Donegal's greatest draw.
Welcome to my forum. It has been a couple of years since I was in Portsalon and I thought the area was fine. No doubt you will be staying in one of those "second homes". You might enjoy looking at this video. Near the end it shows a 360 view of the area and there is a group of holiday homes in it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jY_ykw7ZPP4
If your goal is to choose an isolated area you can always send an inquiry to the cottage of your choice to ask exactly what is surrounding the cottage you are interested in.
I personally prefer dealing with an individual or family when it comes to self-catering. Then you are usually not getting into a "holiday home" experience where you are staying in large clusters of houses.
Have you seen this house on St. John's Point? http://www.teachinnamara.com/ This page shows an aerial view: http://www.teachinnamara.com/thearea.htm Perhaps it has the isolation you desire. I have inspected the B&B that these people own and it's nice. Since their cottage is 4-stars I would assume the same care goes into it.
