Late October Trip to Ireland - The Empty Nest Tour

Michelle and all,

We are planning our trip for Oct 18 Oct 30, 2010.  It is our first trip alone since our son left to attend college.  We would prefer to go early in the month, but Leslie is unable to change her vacation time off.   We are open to any suggestions and input.

Day 1 -  Land in Shannon and get rental car. We've decided to stay in Ennis to get acclimated to the different time. Neither one of us sleeps well on airplanes, so a nap will be needed.

Days 2 and 3 - Doolin:  Ferry to Inish Oir for the day and a boat tour of the Cliffs of Mohr. I am looking forward to visiting the pubs for a real Guinness and music and touring the Burren.

Days 4 and 5 - Galway: Check out the town drive the Connemara Loop. More pubs and music.

Day 6 - Spouse wanted  to spend a night in a castle, so I booked a room at Solis Lough Eske for one night in Donegal.

Days 7 and 8 -  Portrush: Tour Derry/Londonderry and Giants Causeway Coast.

Day 9 -  Belfast:  Black Taxi Tour

Days 10 and 11 - Dublin: Staying in Howth. Plan to take DART train into city.

Thanks in advance.

Rich

I like what you have planned, and I have been in those areas in October twice over the years, and love the weather possibilities in this shoulder season.  One thing you mentioned was staying in Ennis after you land, which is a great idea.  The thing I would suggest, however, is regardless of how much sleep you do or don't get on the plane, try and stay awake for most of the day after you land.  Maybe by walking around Ennis, which is a great town on foot, you can stay awake at least unti after your dinner.  If you go to sleep as soon as you get there, I find it takes an extra day to get back to normal.  Battling to stay awake that first morning and afternoon has always worked well for us.

Have a great trip!

Monty

Rich,

Your itinerary looks well planned and nicely paced. I will mention that toward the end of Oct the days start getting very short. You might want to get earlier starts to compensate for an earlier sunset. I'm not talking about the crack of dawn. After all the Irish B&Bs ususally don't do extremely early breakfasts. Just departing for the day by 9 or 9:30.
