Traveling directly from Dublin City to Shannon airport: what's the best way, and how long might it take?

Welcome to my forum.

1. Drive time from Dublin to Shannon takes about 3 hours. Might be more during rush hour.

2. There is a train that goes Dublin to Limerick. A bus or taxi would be required to get from Limerick to the airport. There is a bus from Shannon Airport to Dublin Airport but it takes about 5 hours for the journey as it makes stops.

May I ask what time your flight departs from Shannon? How many days will you be in Ireland?

Thanks for this information. It looks "do-able." Our flight leaves Shannon for Logan at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, September 27. I think that means we should be at Shannon by 9:30 a.m.?

I'm game for an early rise on Morning, but if the others are not, we can leave Dublin the day before, and book a couple of rooms somewhere near the airport.

You are correct that you should be at Shannon by 9:30. Give yourself time to return the car of course. If your schedule allows I would suggest staying closer to Shannon on your last night. A 3 to 4 hour drive is a tough way to end the trip on the way to catch a flight.

The more I think about it, staying close to Shannon the last night sounds better and better. That way, we'll be able to catch the flight without panicking -- even if we hit one of those potholes on the drive over from Dublin the day before!

If you stay near Shannon you will be able to get up, have breakfast and get to the airport without a dawn patrol marathon of driving.

Kavaghner run from Dublin to Shannon airport and as others I would recommend staying near the Airport the night before. Oakwood arms would be a short taxi drive away or the Park Inn across from the terminal building.

Thanks, Tony. This bears looking into. It may be the lifesaver I've been looking for. As tired as we're sure to be after our 2 weeks in Ireland, it will be wonderful to let someone else take care of the driving on the trip from Dublin to Shannon. I'll have to find out about luggage -- but if that doesn't present a problem, Kavanaugh's it will be!

The lead on the 2 hotels is much appreciated, as well. I'm thinking the Oakwood Arms will be the choice. I'll want to find out whether they provide shuttle service to the airport or if we can book a cab or van for that purpose ourselves. But the hotel looks very comfortable!

Some friends of mine took the Kavanagh bus and said it takes about 5 hours. That was because of the frequent stops. Even though they advertise as being an express bus they do make stops along the way. But there are no "comfort stops" or toilets onboard so don't drink too many Guinnesses before the trip!

The Park Inn is right at the airport so no taxi would be needed. You can walk right to the terminal. They renovated about half of the rooms there a couple of years ago. If you stay at the Park Inn try for one of the updated rooms. The Oakwood Arms would require a taxi but it is a nice hotel. Another suggestion about 10 minutes from the airport is Bunratty Lodge B&B. It is a lovely place and where I always stay - but you would need a taxi from there. It might be worthwhile staying at the B&B just for Mary's charm and delicious Irish breakfast. It all depends on what you are looking for.
