Ireland in September / October

My wife and I are traveling for 2 weeks - last week of Sept / 1st week of October. We have been to Ireland once before and stayed in some lovely cottages that we had reserved in advance in Dingle and Galway, but at  that  time we traveled with our 5 children and a sister so we were forced to make a home base and take day trips from these places.  This time it is just my wife and I and we want to just travel in a circle around the whole country.  I don't want to make reservations in advance because we don't know where the road will take us.  My question is is it difficult at that time of year to just walk up to or ring up a B & B and find a room.  I don't know how busy they are at that time of year.  I know the first time we traveled Ireland we landed on December 26th and I think we were the only tourists on the road for the 2 weeks we traveled. My wife likes to plan in advance and I am more the carefree type - I'll  take what I can find.  Also for planning purposes how much should one expect to pay for a nights stay at a B & B. Thanks so much.

You should have no problems with accommodation unless you clash with some local event which is unlikely. Budget around 40 each per night for B&B. If you start by planing stepping stones on your route and find the contact numbers of 2 guest houses (B&B with over 5 rooms) at each of these locations. That should ensure you have options. If for any reason neither place can accommodate you I am sure they will have contact details for other accommodation they use as backup. The 1st time I took Chris round from Belfast to Dublin we winged the whole thing in 2 weeks mid June. Have fun exploring.

Mike,

Welcome to my forum. Glad to hear you are returning to Ireland again. You received good advice from Tony. I would suggest reservations for Dublin and for your last night. Otherwise I think you will be fine to "wing it".

Go to my Getting Started page for contact info for Tourism Ireland. They will send you lots of free info including a B&B book and map. In some areas you might find B&Bs start closing at the beginning of Oct so pay attention to the opening dates in that book. You can get some personal recommendations here on the forum and on my Lodgings page. My book Ireland Dream Trip has complete reviews of places that I really like along with lots of other info to make your trip a success.

I suggest you have a general idea of what you want to see and where you want to go. Even with two weeks you will not be able to see everything. But you can see a good amount in that time period. You have time to do your homework since you are planning well in advance. Also look at my Car & Money pages to get yourself set up with info you need to address months in advance.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Michele

Mike,

I wrote an article on my Blog about what things cost in Ireland. It might be of help with budgeting.
