From Dingle to Dublin Advise

Hello Michelle!

My name is Mariana and I am in desperate need of advise. Me and my cousin will be travelling to Ireland in the beginning of August. I booked a hotel in Dingle and after that I have to be back in Dublin (or somewhere with a airport) so I can take a plane to Scotland. But beetween Dingle and Dublin I have three open days. I would like to know if you have any tips for me, maybe somewhere I can visit on the way back. We will be travelling by train or bus...

Thank you so much!

Mariana, São Paulo, Brasil.

Mariana,

Welcome to my forum. The airports nearest to the SW with flights to Scotland are Cork and Shannon.

You might want to consider a few days in Killarney. It is an excellent base for those using public transportation. I highly recommend  Killarney Lodge and Earl's Court House - both being walking distanct to town. From Killarney you can get day tours to various places and there is plenty to do locally.

From Killarney there is easy train access to both Cork and Dublin airports. For Shannon you would have to take a bus.

Let me know if I can answer any other questions.

Michele

You could head towards Galway where Aer Arann fly Galway to Edinbugh. They Also fly to Glasgow from Cork or even Donegal. Flying from Galway give you the chance to see the West Clare coast and Burren, Galway and the Connemara but I admit to being biased.

The Irish train system is a 'Hub and Spokes' system, with the "HUB" being Dublin.

They offer Internet Specials for 10 Euro, one way when purchased in advance (even just the day before!) to MOST destinations.  There are direct connections to/from Cork, Killarney,  Galway, etc., AND Dublin -- but, travel from Galway and Killarney can be a bit complicated ...

Bus: http://www.buseireann.ie/

Galway and Killarney have excellent, close-in hostels (should you want to go THAT route) and are walkable destinations that also offer plenty of touring options for non-drivers.  They also both have an energetic, youthful vibe.

Killarney:

Dublin:

As has been pointed out, you are spoilt for choices to make your way to Scotland -- You could even do a Ferry from Belfast, should that appeal:

With only three days, I would recommend that you choose ONE destination (other than Dingle) and go with that.

Thank you guys so much for the tips!! You gave me a lot to work with! I'll be checking them all very carefully. I agree due to the time I should probably choose only one town to visit.

In case of any remaining doubts I'll more certainly be in touch...

Hi! One more question!

I'm going to Dingle because of the beautiful landscapes, but I'm not sure it will be worthy since I don't have a car...What do you think? Do you have anywhere else you would recommend for this purpose?

A very grateful, Mariana.

About the car I meant, a car to walk around and see everything there is to see...

Dingle is I confess not one of my favourite places in Ireland. Dingle without a Car is really not the best choice. It is not the easiest place to get to by public transport and you would do better to take a tour of Dingle from Killarney. Itallian Chauffeur has put down some good suggestions, I don't know how long you have booked the Hotel for but you could walk round Dingle town in 1/2 hour. These are the 2 bus timetables for the area.

I would suggest Killarney -- LOTS to do in and around town, either on foot or by relatively inexpensive small bus tours -- INCLUDING Dingle -- as a daytrip.

www.derostours.com

Killarney National Park, Torc Falls, Muckross House/ Gardens and Traditional Farms, Ross Castle -- and much, much more.

Michele LOVES Kenmare - a smaller town, a bit South of Killarney, but for YOUR situation, I think Killarney makes more sense.

Easy access, by train to Dublin and Cork, too.

Mariana,

Definitely Killarney, as mentioned originally. You really can't go wrong there. Plus plenty of day tours and local things to do. If you get good weather try the Gap of Dunloe tour.
