I am a Canadian female university student who is heading to Galway, Ireland this fall to live and work (I will have a valid Ireland work visa). Having never travelled alone before, I am a little apprehensive, mainly worried about being able to meet other young people and create a life there. I have also heard that Ireland has been especially devastated by the recession, and that the job market is quite difficult at the moment. I will be staying at Kinlay Hostel for the first few days of my trip. I am wondering if you have any tips on where to meet people, housing, must sees, et cetera.
Galway is a compact little city, more like a large town. There is a large student population so dont worry about meeting people in the same situation as yourself. Ireland has been hit by the recession and the Celtic Tiger packed up and left several years ago but dont worry about that either there are always shop, bar/hotel and other jobs available for students who are prepaired to do them. Your 1st contact could be the University Student support office and the Student Union, they will give you most of the information that you need.
Welcome to my forum. You have received good solid advice from Tony. As he said Galway is a "college town". There will be lots of young people your age there. I'm sure you will meet others in your situation at the hostel. I wouldn't be surprised if the owners have contacts for your situation. You could drop them an email to find out. Of course the university will have all the info and other contacts you will need: http://www.nuigalway.ie/
