I have never had problems upgrading my car when needed. But it will depend on different factors like your arrival time, how many cars they have at the depot, etc. You can phone Dooley at 1-800-331-9301. I suggest you also get a quote on how much it will cost to upgrade.
I don't know that it's a good idea to have the luggage on a roof rack exposed to the elements and passersbys. It is better to have it secured in the trunk (boot) out of sight. I would upgrade the car rather than get a luggage rack.
Just looked at the Dooley's fleet page the only cars I would worry about for 4 people and baggage would be the Fiesta and Micra (possibly) and the Uno (definitely). I would stay clear of roof boxes but upgrades are sometimes possible and even negotiable ocasionaly outside peak season.

Thanks for the information. I think we'll all fit into the car we've reserved - and if we can't, Dooley assures me (I know, take it all with a grain of salt) that I'll have no trouble upgrading if necessary. My wife and I test-packed last night and don't think we'll need more than one medium-large suitcase and a couple of small carry-ons. If the other couple are able to do the same, we'll have no trouble.
Dooley, by the way, says they won't let you use a luggage rack, in any case. So we'll either fit in the car we get or upgrade to something more roomy -- and pricey.

We're leaving Saturday and will arrive at Shannon on 6:30 Sunday morning. I'll try to keep you posted during our 15 days. Our itinerary -- I probably mentioned this before -- is Doolin to Dingle to Kilkenny to Dublin and back to Shannon. Each stop, of course, is first and foremost a base of operations from which to explore. None of the four of us have been to Ireland before so, needless to say, we're excited.
