Family trip with kids-March '02

Michele,

Just found your wonderful website. We have airfare to Dublin arriving March 9 a.m. and leaving March 14 at noon. We deserately need expert advice on what to do, where to stay, rent a car or use the buses. With so little time, I am overwhelmed. We are traveling with four adults and two children (ages 2.5 and 7). Please help!

Additional info

Michele,

A few more items to mention. My husband turns 40 on the 11th. Is there something special you might suggest doing? Also, my children, both boys, love trains....the older one likes castles, too. I love horseback riding, and have some riding experience. And since our family is of Irish decent, maybe we should do some research while there? We already have the family crest.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I've ordered your book, and am anxiously awaiting it's arrival!

Hi Shelly,

Welcome to my forum. I'm glad you found my web site and that it is helping you plan your trip to Ireland. I also received your e-mail and will send you all the details you requested about my Ireland trip planning & itinerary service. Since time is so short it may be the best way to go and I have budget or deluxe plans available to suit all budgets.

I'm sure that you can fit in many of the activities you want during your stay. Since you will be there in March not all things will be open and some of the local steam trains might not be operating. Of course you could always take a regularly scheduled train ride with the kids. No problem with the horseback riding or castles. Depending on where you are on the 11th, I can most likely recommend something special for your husband's big day.

As for doing genealogy on your trip, unless you have already researched it and have a good idea of where to look in Ireland for your ancestors time might be too short at this point to do much.

I've received your book order (thanks!) and will mail it to you tomorrow. Look for it shortly.

If you have any other questions feel free to post them here.

Happy travels,

Michele

Trains

Just a quick note that the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland has their headquarters in Whitehead, Co. Antrim.

Their website is at www.rpsi-online.org/

Hi Darren,

Thanks very much for the link, which I've added to my extensive collection of bookmarks. That was one I didn't have yet! Your comments are always appreciated.

castles and trains

Shelley:

If you want to find castles and trains (in a small version) right next to each other, you could go to Malahide castle and the Fry Model Railway Museum is right next to it. The only link I found the Fry is:
www.visit.ie/countries/ie...ymodel.htm

Hope this helps and have a great time.

Bill

Thanks Bill

Bill,

Thanks for the link. Actually I thought of that right after my posting. The Fry Model Railway is fascinating for kids of all ages. Since Shelley has decided to have me do an itinerary for her she probably won't be posting on the board any more since she has my undivided attention!

P.S.

I forgot to mention:

I _think_ that the Bushmills and Giants Causeway Steam Railway is supposed to be opening this summer. It's being run by the small engines which used to be at Shanes Castle in Co. Antrim.

Darren,

Thanks! I will look forward to doing that myself the next time I'm up your way.
