Robin Unregistered User (7/27/01 10:01 pm) Reply Crogh Patrick Mountain Hi! Can anyone tell me their opinion of climbing Crogh Patrick Mountain. I thought it would be fun to do on our trip to Ireland. How long will it take, is the climb difficult and do I need to be super fit to do it?
irrover Unregistered User (7/27/01 10:21 pm) Reply Croagh Patrick As far as the climb, it takes about two hours up and just over an hour down. It is a somewhat steep climb and does get a little treacherous near the top (especially if its windy or wet which depending on the season it is alot). I enjoyed it for the views of Clew Bay and connemara to the south but I love hiking.

Thought I'd add a little more to what Michael (irrover) had to say in his first-hand report of climbing the mountain.
Being fit for the climb is a good idea but I really don't think "super fit" is necessary. After all it isn't Mt. Everest. Having said that, every July thousands of people climb the mountain (some barefoot) in all kinds of weather and with all levels of athletic ability.
There is a very interesting article originally published in the magazine The World Of Hibernia that you can read about the climb online, and perhaps it will be of help:
If I were doing the climb I would want good weather since I would want to see the view from the top. I hope the sun shines on the day you do it.
Happy travels,
Michele
Robin Unregistered User (8/1/01 12:08 am) Reply Thanks! Thank you both for your replies. I think we will try to do the climb if the weather is good. If it is not we will do something else in the area. Suggestions? Michelle I enjoyed that article on Hibernaia's web site and the other sites also. I think its cool that you help so many different people and I'm glad to have found this board.

I'm glad to be able to share my experience in Ireland with you and others. Your thanks makes all the time I put in worthwhile! I'm glad you found my forum too.
If the weather is doesn't cooperate you could do the following:
1. The Croagh Patrick Center 2. Westport House and Zoo 3. Westport Town 4. Achill Island, which is Ireland's largest island and is connected to the mainland by a bridge 5. Burrishoole Abbey
