The Quiet Man film sites

I am planning a trip in October of 2001 to Ireland and Scotland. Would there be some information on film sites to visit or directions? Thank you.

Re: The Quiet Man film sites

Hello Lynne,

The Quiet Man starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara was filmed in and around the village of Cong in County Mayo and I believe the movie is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Currently there is a Quiet Man Cottage Museum (very small) that you can visit in Cong. While there I suggest you go into John Murphy's store (aka Cohan's Pub) and buy a copy of his booklet about the making of the Quiet Man. The Quiet Man bridge is outside Maam Cross and the beach where the horse race was filmed is Thallabawn south of Louisburgh. Cong Abbey, Ashford Castle and the Playfair house are all in Cong.

I have a section in my book "Best Little Guide to Ireland" about Cong and the Quiet Man. You can go to this link to order: www.irelandyes.com/book.html

I'm not quite sure what you mean about directions. If it's driving directions to Cong, I suppose it would depend on where you are starting from so you will have to get back to me with more info.

Happy travels,

Michele

Film Sites, etc.

Hi Michele and everyone!
Michele, please forgive me for answering your earlier question to me (6/13/01 I'm back/where to begin) here, but I'm still not familiar with this new forum site, and I do have an answer also about film sites.
Anyway, you had asked me if our "maybe" cousin at Foynes Flying Boat Museum is Martina or Margaret. The answer is Margaret, and she is a real gem. We so enjoyed our brief visit with her. But she doesn't know about the smashed cake! Our hosts at our B&B dished up the "remains" and we shared it with them, along with a good laugh!
About the film sites, when we went on a tour of Slea Head on Dingle Peninsula (it was the only time I didn't drive, and it was great getting to look around!)our driver mentioned that Far and Away was filmed there. In fact, he said he was hired by the movie studio as one of the drivers for the cast/crew. And he also said that Tom Cruise's accent was terrible!
Also, I wanted to post the site for the cottage we rented. As I told you, it was wonderful, as were the owners, Paula and Tom Walsh and their four year old Timmy. The link is www.irish-holiday-rentals.com/atlantic-wave/index.html
At the bottom of that site is a link to their B&B, Seamount House, which is just two doors down.
For anyone wanting to stay in Foynes, I would highly recommend the B&B, Leahies Lodge. I don't have a web site for them but their phone number (Mary and her husband, Pat) is 069-65093 (of course with the 011 and country code).
We are still talking about our trip.
Best regards to all,
Pat

Hi Pat,

Great to hear from you again. No problem with posting wherever you want. I'm still getting used to the new forum too. I've met your cousin Margaret a few times and she is always so pleasant and helpful. Last time we were at the Foynes Flying Boat Museum she had a broken leg and we couldn't see her but she sent me a nice note. Her musuem is so interesting and different, and Martina makes a fabulous Irish coffee!

Thanks for the ancedotes about "Far and Away" and Tom Cruise. The movie "Ryan's Daughter" was also filmed on the Dingle Peninsula -- it's such a scenic area. And thanks also for the links and recommendations. I'm sure everyone here will be looking at them. It's always good to have a personal recommendation.

Please, feel free to stop by and get your Ireland "fix" anytime and if you think of any other interesting tips about Ireland post away. Thanks again!

Michele

Links

Hi again, Michele!
When I posted the Atlantic Waves cottage recommendation, of course you know that it is on Dingle Peninsula, but I didn't mention that in my last post, so this is for the readers that didn't know.
It is a wonderful place -- a bit off the beaten path, but well worth it.
The other place I mentioned, Leahies Lodge, is just outside of Foynes. It is new, and Mary and her husband built it for the purpose of opening a B&B. She is also a delightful person, and went for a long walk with us.
Of course you already have the link for Bunratty Lodge, since it is in your book, which is the first place we stayed on arrival at Shannon airport. A beautiful place, and I liked Mary very much.
I would like to take my husband to Ireland next year, so I will keep getting my "fix" by checking in on this board.
If we go again next year, I think we will spend a week "on the road" sightseeing and staying at B&Bs along the way, in order to see a bit more of Ireland -- then we would rent Atlantic Waves for a week so as to leisurely enjoy the cottage and Dingle Peninsula and Tralee and other towns nearby. And of course we would go to Foynes and see Margaret.
I know this sounds "corny" (can't help it, I'm from Illinois LOL!) but I feel I left a piece of my heart in Ireland. I already have a longing to go back.
Best regards to all,
Pat

The Ireland Bug

Hi Pat,

You have been bitten by the Ireland bug. The only cure is to return again to the Emerald Isle! And I hope you and your husband get to do it next year. Thanks for posting more links and if you need any help at all with your upcoming trip, I'll be happy to add my two cents worth.

What is a Flying Boat?

Hi Everyone,

I am enjoying this forum and reading about other peoples trips. It looks like I will have to see Dingle on my trip also. Is it possible to see it when I am staying in Killarney or should I count on spending some time there? Where is the Foyns Flying Boat Musuem and what's there?

A Flying Boat Can Land on the River Shannon!

Hi Norman,

Glad to hear you are enjoying my forum while planning your trip to Ireland! Yes, Dingle is a must and you can do it as a day trip from Killarney. But if you have an extra day nothing beats staying in Dingle.

The Foynes Flying Boat Museum is a small museum in Foynes, which is due west of Limerick on the south side of the Shannon River on route N69. At one time this was the original Shannon Airport where planes that could float made water landings after transcontinental flights. The old propeller planes were called "flying boats" since they could fly as well as float and land on the water. So the original Shannon Airport was actually the Shannon River where planes took off and landed in the water!

The museum tells the history of the flying boats, the beginnings of transcontinental air service, Shannon Airport and the invention of Irish Coffee. It has many audio-visual displays, dioramas, a theater with old newsreel movies of the flying boats, a hands-on radio room where you can send a telegraph message or pretend you are guiding the planes in. It's a very different and interesting museum. Be sure to try the Irish coffee!
