Just found your site and there is such a wealth of information! It's great!
We are traveling to Ireland for a family wedding at the beginning of October for 10 days. Most of that time will be spent with family in the Cork area but we will be on our own for 4 nights before we leave from Shannon. We have been to Ireland a few times before but this time we are traveling with our daughter (5) and twin sons (7). We have been staring at the map and trying to figure out the best thing to do with our time. We were thinking of either spending two nights in the Cashel-Cahir area and then two nights near Shannon. Or maybe spend all 4 nights in one area and do day trips from there?
Can you recommend any interesting towns/villages in the west that would be a good base to stay in with children (i.e. interesting )?
Welcome to my forum. You will have great fun at an Irish wedding. Prepare to party!
Killarney has a lot to offer. Plus if you get a lot of rain there is an indoor water park in Tralee, which is not too far. In the area is boating, horseback riding, hiking Killarney National Park, Muckross Traditional Farms, and various day trips.
You might consider renting a condo or cottage for three or four days. What time is your flight at Shannon?
Thanks Michele. I forgot to mention that the wedding reception is actually at a Killarney hotel so we are staying there for 3 nights, then on to Cork City with the relatives for a few nights. We were thinking of staying at Joy's Rockside House in Cashel for two nights and seeing the Rock and Cahir Castle. Then we got to thinking that if the weather does not cooperate, there wouldn't be many inside activities for the kids in the area. Looking at the map and through travel forums it looks like Ennis is centrally located (as in an hour to 90 minutes) to places like Galway, Cliffs of Moher, and also Cashel and Cahir (and Shannon!). We were considering Eden Hill House thinking the kids might find it interesting staying in a farmhouse. We are still open to suggestions though!
Thanks for the extra info. It certainly changes things. Actually staying in Cashel for two nights and Ennis for 2 is not a bad idea. If you want a farm location then Dualla House outisde Cashel would be wonderful for the kids. They can see the sheep and sheepdogs and enjoy the estate there. They have a big family room that will accommodate you all. If you get rained in Kilkenny is only about an hour drive from there. You can easily get to Shannon Airport from Ennis.
