I'd appreciate route suggestions for driving from Dublin (airport car rental) to Dingle. While we'll stop for lunch and a wee bit of sightseeing I'd like to arrive at our rental before dark on the 5th of October, 2010. (Our departure from airport will probably be around 10:00 am) Also, about how many hours should your suggested route(s) take, including, as mentioned, a couple stops en route? Go raibh maith agat, sceala
That is not a drive that I would undertake after an international flight. A cross-country drive on any given day is an exhausting event. Dublin to Dingle, using the main routes, will take close to 5 1/2 hours. That doesn't take into consideration stops along the way for a meal, picture taking or just to shake off the jet lag and stretch.
That being said, you would be best to come via the M7...then at exit 30 take the M20 (look for signposting "Cork")...Look for the Exit signposted Tralee/Killarney...that will take you on to the N21...about 5 miles further..at another roundabout....look for N21 Tralee....This will take you into Adare...a good place to get out..take a stroll and grab a bite to eat....continue on the N21 until you reach Tralee...then look for the signposting N22(SignPosted Killgorlin N70)...continue on to roundabout indicating N70 (signposted Dingle N86)...N86 takes you right into Dingle town.
That should get you to Dingle within your time frame, allowing for lunch and a few stops along the way.
Thanks SO much for your advice. Actually, we're arriving in Dublin before the 5th. I know better than attempting such a jaunt after landing. Slan beo, sceala
Glad to help. Enjoying a few Dublin days before heading west?
You can also take the M7 to the M8 then to R639 headed towards Cashel & Tipperary...then grab the Limerick Road.... N24.....picking up the M7 and the Limerick bypass...then pick up the M20 for the next 6 miles or so.and then grab N21...and continue on with the directions I provided below...
That would give you the opportunity to see the Rock of Cashel.
You can get a good idea of the routes by visiting aaireland.ie or multimap.com. I prefer multimap, as it gives you the option of choosing the big blue crayon routing where it takes you section by section in words and mapping...It also seems to be truer to real life in its driving times. To show you what I mean, I have plotted a Dublin to Dingle route via Cashel for you with multimap and again with aaireland
You are coming up on your trip quickly. Safe travels and may the memories be happy in the making and plentiful.
I appreciate both routes. (We're actually gonna' stay in Anascaul...for a week of enjoying Co. Kerry.) I've printed each out, along with your helpful responses. Slan go foill, sceala
I'm glad to see you were in good hands and helped by the other forum members while I was in Ireland for over a month. Let us know if you have any other questions.
