We just got back and had a fabulous time! I wanted to post that the Tesco Mobile SIM card purchase was a great idea!
We took two unlocked phones over with us, and purchased two SIM's. We topped off each with 10 of time. Tesco gave us the double credit on each phone even without registering!
The 2 cent/min calls to the US were great! I called mom each evening and talked for 10-30 minutes. We also used the phones to keep in touch with Keith's 2nd cousin who was there while we were. Now that we are home we still have close to 10 call credit left on each phone!
Tesco offers the best coverage and deals, by far. Here is the link to their website. In most cases, I think, if pre-ordered, they will even deliver them to your first night's lodging.
As to the topic of Tesco, I'll also add my agreement --
As many of you know, I've maintained an active Vodaphone account for the last six or so years, as all that was required was to 'Top Up' within 12 months to keep them from canceling you out due to inactivity. Knowing that this past July would be past that, I had my wife's cousin do a small 'Top Up' for us, in May.
But, when we landed in Dublin, my Vodaphone SIM would NOT activate and with our cross-connection onwards to Cardiff, I really didn't have time to correct it. There was a Tesco, however, very near the Cardiff Airport, right along our route, so I dropped in to purchase an 'Emergency' SIM. I think the posted price was 2 or 3 GBP, but I also purchased 10 GBP (about $15, at the time) of call credit, so the SIM was free. That lasted us throughout our 4 day stay in England AND numerous Text messages to/from Ireland while we were on the overnight Ferry to Cork.
I bought another Tesco SIM after landing in Ireland -- which was ALSO free, in conjunction with a 10 Euro 'Top Up' -- though I didn't get the DOUBLING Credit for Registering that YOU got ....
I finally made it to a Vodaphone Shop in the afternoon of Day 2 in Ireland and discovered that they NOW Cancel inactive accounts after SIX months!!!! but they had NOT re-issued my old number and only required me to 'Top Up' to reactivate.
I continued to use the Tesco account in our spare phone for the remaining two weeks -- specifically for calling back to the US (trying to 'Use It Up' -- but never did!) -- So, yeah, it seems like a pretty good bargain to me.
I THINK Tesco will allow me to "Top Up' on-line, using a US credit Card -- something that Vodaphone does NOT allow, but I haven't tried that yet.
Tesco uses the O2 Network, so coverage was pretty much universally comperable to my Vodaphone, as well, so no downside there, either.
We have small grand children and elderly parents, so a phone is pretty essential to our Peace of Mind. For people in a similar position, Tesco seems like a pretty good option.

Bob.. you could have purchased an Ireland bolt/add on to the Tesco UK sim costs £1.99 and gives the same rates 10p/min for calls and free to receive UK calls whilst in Ireland. The UK top ups are also x3 rather than the Irish x2 but don't offer the 2c international calls. The point being that anyone visiting UK and Ireland might be better off on the UK network for Britain and Ireland provided they are in UK 1st?

Does anyone know if Tesco has a SIM card that will work in an AT&T IPhone? A friend is headed to NI this coming Sunday and would like to just use a SIM card in her own phone.
I always buy the TESCO phones so not sure if that is possible.
The Tesco SIM should work fine in an AT&T phone, PROVIDED that the phone is at LEAST a Tri-Band and that they have the UNLOCK code. If they have had the phone for a while, AT&T SHOULD 'Unlock' it for free.
