Itinerary Check

Michele,

Your website is most helpful and a pleasure to read. I would be most grateful if you could please tell me what you think of my itinerary. This will be a second trip to Ireland.

Day one: arrive at Shannon, get car and explore Bunratty Castle and area, proceed on to Ennis for the night.

Day two: Drive to the Cliffs of Moher for a brief visit, continue on to Galway to explore that afternoon and spend night.

Day three: Drive to Cong, explore area and spend night at Ashford Castle.

Day four: Drive to Clifden, Kylemore Abbey, and Wesport for the day, return late in the afternoon to Ashford Castle for night.

Day five: spend final morning leisurely at Ashford until checkout limit. Drive to Sligo, stopping along anything of interest along the way (recommendations for specific sites along the way or in Sligo itself?) Stay overnight.

Day six: check out any additional spots in Sligo before driving on to Donegal. Check out the town and area and spend the night.

Day seven: More Donegal and overnight.

Day eight: Drive to Giant's Causeway and Rope Bridge. Spend night in area (recommendation?)

Day nine: Drive to Cavan for overnight (anything of interest along the way?)

Day ten: Drive to Cashel, making a stop to see Birr Castle along the way.

Day eleven: Visit sites in the Cashel are before driving back to Shannon area. Return car and spend overnight at a nearby hotel.

Day twelve: Fly home.

Thanks in advance!

Looks Good

Hi Dee,

Your itinerary looks very good and well thought out. What time of year will you be going to Ireland? The reason I ask is that Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge is taken down in mid-September. If you are traveling in the off-season it is important to check on opening times of things you want to see.

There are many things of interest in and around Sligo. There are several scenic drives, Parke's Castle, Yeats' Grave, Carrowmore Prehistoric Cemetery, Creevykeel Tomb, Lissadell House, Rosses Point, Strandhill. Of course it all depends on your interests.

Near the Giant's Causeway I recommend Craig Park in Bushmills. I have many recommendations for good places to stay, sightseeing, restaurants and pubs in my book:
www.irelandyes.com/book.html

On your way from Northern Ireland to Cavan it really depends on your route as to what you might see. The Ulster American Folk Park and the Ulster History Park (both near Omagh) are very interesting. The Enniskillen area is delightful.

Since you have been to Ireland before you obviously have a feel for traveling around the country. It looks like a great itinerary. Enjoy your trip!

Thanks

Thank you Michele for your response and suggestions and thank you for pointing out that the rope bridge gets taken down in September. I actually haven't decided when I will take this trip, I monitor airfares daily and will make the decision when I see good fares. I like to travel spontaneously and as well as with plans set many months in advance. Ever since my first trip to Ireland earlier this year, I've been obsessed with going back! I feel right at home there, at ease with the land, the roads, the people, everything.

irish fever

Hi Dee,
Those are interesting comments. You do sound like you feel closer to the Irish culture.
Ever since our trip, my wife and I also seem more in tune with the Irish. We love to listen to the Irish music, watch the riverdance type stuff.
Just the other day we attended a local Friends of the Irish dancer group. Young girls and guys being taught the Irish type dance stuff. So cool to watch.
happy travels

Ireland Addiction

Hi Dee,

I can certainly understand your addiction to Ireland. Many of us on this forum have it (as does Gary). Fortunately the only side effect is an uncontrolable urge to return...again and again!

It's a good idea to keep an eye on the airfares. Of course it is during the winter that the rates really go down to rock bottom.

Please make yourself at home on my forum. We have a nice little community of helpful people here.

Michele :)
