car insurance - personal liability & injury

After reading many posts and carefully checking websites and credit card coverage, I have determined that my M/C platinum does cover CDW and theft in Ireland. They faxed me a letter of coverage and told me to present it to the counter and keep a copy. They also provided me with a international toll free number to call if there is a problem or claim. However, she said to make sure we had personal liability and injury coverage. I called my insurance company, Allied, and was surprised to learn that neither my auto, home or umbrella policy cover personal liability or injury outside of North America. Now what? Just what does the "third party liability" that is included in Ireland rentals cover? My insurance person was not sure. Can I purchase just personal liability from the rental co?

Boy, things sure are confusing. Many people say/think that they are covered, but do not actually check. If you don't have an accident, I guess it's ok, but what if...?

Insurance

I don't know the answer to your question but can tell you that when I rented a car for a week in Ireland this summer, I purchased the super cdw so that I didn't have any worries whatsoever. It's worth the small expense to have the peace of mind that I could return the car in shambles and not have to pay a thing. I follow Murphy's law that if you are totally and overly prepared, you won't need it. My car went back to the company exactly as they had given it to me.

Good luck with everything and have a safe, enjoyable trip.

Re: car insurance - personal liability & injury

Hi Chris,

This is what the Ireland car rental web sites say about third party liability:

"Third party liability insurance is included in the quoted price. This insurance covers damage to people or property whilst the vehicle is under the care of the renter. It is compulsory to have a minimum of Third party Liability Insurance to drive in Ireland so this option cannot be waived or excluded."

In other words it is included in any car you rent in Ireland.

Is this the info you needed?

Michele
