I am a solo female traveler - flying into Shannon in April 2011. I've already booked a self catering cottage in Ballycotton. I will be in Ireland for 7 nights. I want to visit Youghal and other small towns on the Irish Riviera. I drove on the left for a week in Australia - with no problem. But I did have my mom as navigator then! This will be my 1st time in Ireland. I've heard very good and very bad things about renting a car, driving, traffic, etc. Do you think I am wise to rent a car in order to take in the areas around/near Ballycotton? Got a place to stay, but can't decide how to get there! Help!

I have made several solo journeys to Ireland. I have always rented a car. A small subcompact is perfect for one person! I have a friend over in Northern Ireland at present, traveling on her own. A car is your best bet, if you want to explore off the beaten path sites.
Sorry but you are going to need a car to see the best of Ireland especialy the rural areas. I dont usually recomend Sat Nav/GPS but in your case it might be helpfull. Just incase you are wondering about public transport this is the local timetable & service map.
For the area you are staying in you definitely need a car. As Bit (CowboyCraic) relates she often rents a car solo. I don't think you will have any problems. If you decide not to rent a GPS then be sure to study your map at the beginning of each day so you know generally where you are headed.
Thanks for all the great advice. I will definitely be renting a car. I'm really good at maps, so will pass on the GPS system. I appreciate everyone's input!! Thanks!
