international driver's licence? I just read somewhere you have to have an international driver's licence - is that true? and how do you get it?
Also, to rent a car - if you use a platinum Master card you don't have to pay the extra insurance for the rent-a-car. You get a better deal with Dan-Dooley's if you call their NJ office and don't book on-line.

Re: international driver's licence? You do not need an international DL to drive in Ireland. A valid US drivers License is all you need.
RE the mastercard - You do need to double check your platinum MC. SOME cover CDW in Ireland , and some DON'T. Always best to check, and if possible have them send you something in writing that says it is covered.

Re: international driver's licence? To find out if your MC covers you, call 1-800 MCASSIST. If you call your bank, they will not know. They will be happy to send you a letter confirming your coverage. It is good to have but frequently not asked for by the rental agent.
I am told that the international DL can be useful in Spain, Italy and France (to name a few). It apparently merely provides translations of the information on your US DL. It is not actually a license, but more of a permit.
Re: international driver's licence? Hi stannseniors,
Debbie and Bill have said it all. No International license needed in Ireland. I use my MasterCard all the time for insurance on car rentals. Do check on whether there is a "international surcharge" added to yours.
