What are the don't miss sites to see in and around the Killarney area.

my favorite small town

For starters there is Ahgadoe Heights (not sure of the spelling). The view of the lake from here is awesome.
Gap of Dunloe is another place nearby but would take a little more time.
Ross Castle is cool.
Let's read what the others suggest.

Re: my favorite small town

almost every guide book will have plenty of selections for Killarny - it all depends on what YOU like.

I liked the Ring of Kerry ( especially Sneem) and Muckross house. The Jaunting car ride was fun too.

The music in Killarney at night is a big draw for me as well.

Gap tour

I did the Gap of Dunloe tour in the rain and it was still worth it. The first part of the tour is by boat across the lake. On the other side you can either walk the seven miles through the gap, rent a jaunting car, or cylcle if you have rented a bike. Stunning scenery. The pub music was terrific as well, look for a pub called the Granary in downtown.

Killarney

Torc Waterfall; Muckross House and Gardens; Staigue Fort near Sneem; Ladies' View; boat tour of the Lakes. If you go to Ross Castle walk down the lane to the left (as you face the castle) and see the cottage ruins with a big old tree growing up out of the middle. Makes a nice stroll through the woods.
If you don't want to do the whole Gap thing, just walk up into the Gap for a ways early in the morning for a lovely experience.

Hi John,

Besides the excellent suggestions that everyone else has made I will add:

Muckross Traditional Farms
Muckross Abbey
Torc Waterfall (take the path to the top for great views)
Knockreer Estate & Deenagh Cottage
Boat ride on the lakes
National Museum of Irish Transport
Aghadoe: views, partial round tower, ruined monastery, cemetery
