Re
back roads

OK Michele, this is a ridiculously nit-picky question, and reeks of over planning ... but here goes:

I am spending only my first night in Cahir and will be heading towards Cobh and then Kinsale. You know me, N8 is out of the question. R668 heads south, but then branches with one branch becoming R669 (goes to Cappoquin) the other remaining R668. Michelin lists them both as scenic. Have you traveled either or both of them and would you choose one over the other?

From there I'm going south to Youghal along some tiny road that will no doubt have my sister quaking with fear. From there, on to Cobh. I'll be trying to take the ferry across to "the mainland" and Kinsale. Any hints for that? I don't imagine that, on the east end of the Great Island, there is a ferry to East Ferry. That would make too much sense.

How's that for micro planning.

Bill

The Vee Drive

Hi Bill,

Not nit-picky at all. When you are traveling with other people you want it to be perfect. Actually you are choosing a great route - The Vee Drive - R668 through the Knockmealdown Mountains to Lismore is just lovely. Be sure to stop off at the viewpoints along the way. Lismore is a very nice small town with a castle & gardens. The castle is not open to the public but the gardens can be toured (they were okay but not anything to write home about). Actually I thought the view of the castle from the road was the best place to see it from (photo ops).

From Lismore to Youghal if you can stick as close to the River Blackwater as possible it is a very pretty drive. It won't scare your sisters but I'm sure you will manage to do that elsewhere. (Though there is a B&B on that road that would scare anyone.)

Are you visiting the Queenstown Story at Cobh? It is very interesting and well done. St. Colman's Cathedral is worth a visit as well as walking about the cute town. There is a ferry that will take you from near Cobh across the river so you can avoid all that Cork City traffic: www.merseyshipping.co.uk/...sriver.htm

For once I get to give you advice! ;)

Michele

back roads

Thanks for the advice Michele. I still have lots to learn about the back roads. I'd like to take them all some day. I had heard of the Vee drive and I was pretty sure that was it. I meant to go that way last time, but you know how plans change.

Yes, we plan to spend some time in Cobh and see the sites. This will actually be my first time there. There is so much to see in that little country. I have ideas on what to see three trips down the road.

I'm trying not to do many of the things I've done in the past, but I'll be going to a lot of the same areas. Lots to see.

Oh well, I'm rambling. Thanks for the confirmation on R668.

Bill

The Vee Drive

Hi Bill,

I won't tell you why it's called The Vee Drive. I will just let it surprise you. You will figure it out at one of the viewpoints (unless you are socked in by the weather). But maybe one of the books you have has already explained it. In that case let your sister be surprised. If you want some scary roads let me know.

Michele
