I proposed on our Ireland trip! My wife (now, was girlfriend then fiancee in Ireland) and I went to Ireland in August of 2000. Partly because we wanted to go on a vacation, and partly to go to her best-friend-from-high-school's wedding, which was in a small town on the west coast called Mulloughmore. This is were it gets kind of international. I'm Canadian, my wife is from Israel. She went to a American school in Israel. And her best friend there is German and was getting married to great guy from Belfast. So for this trip/wedding we had a "little-U.N." happening.
Anyway, my girlfriend (at the time) and I had been taking about getting married for sometime, but I had been putting off the "proposal" for a couple of months. Saying that we should wait a bit longer, for "whatever" reasons. Of course my plan was to propose to her in Ireland all along, since we had been planning the trip for a few months. But I figured it would be to obvious of a time/place to do it. So I had to "throw her off the trail" so to speak. I successfully convinced her that I hadn't bought a ring before we left for Ireland. And so I couldn't possibly propose while in Ireland.
We flew from Toronto to Dublin, and promptly got a rental car, and drove 200-250 km to Mulloughmore (sp?). Which isn't a big drive in Canada, but is in Ireland as we sorely found out. Anyways, we got to the Inn in Mulloughmore, and settled down. The wedding was in a day and a half, so we had some time. We brought a wedding gift, and planned on wrapping it there. So while my wife ran down to the front desk to ask for scissors (of course, we carried wrapping paper across the Atlantic, but heaven forbid we bring scissors!), I hid the ring in one of the drawers in the desk in our room. By the way, it was a fantastic Inn! and the room was great.
When She came back up, I asked her to check the drawers in the desk. When she opened the drawer wit hthe ring in it, she turned to me and asked "what's this?". I got down on one knee and asked her to marry me.
Thank you so much for sharing your romantic tale of proposing to your wife. She must have been thrilled and surprised. I am familiar with Mullaghmore in Co. Sligo - a lovely seaside village. What a perfect setting for your proposal. I'm sure all here will enjoy your story.
