Thanksgiving trip I just returned from my first trip to Ireland . I was a little apprehensive about going this time of year, but it was quite magical. Here's an overview.
Day 1- Land in Shannon, drive to Cong for stay at Ashford. Much road construction going on now, look out for detours that are poorly marked. Became lost a couple of times, but arrived safely. Day 2- Leave out for day trip to Tullamore to visit the Tullamore Dew whisky distillery. Great scenic trip to midlands, but disaster struck on the way back to Cong. I should have heeded the warnings not to drive at night. Had a blowout and was forced to change a tire without light in a driving cold rain. Arrived back at Ashford around 9 p.m. Day 3- Left for Donegal via the coastal roads. Visited the Ciede Fields and the quaint villages on the north coast. Sampled some Donegal night life. Day 4- Shopped in Donegal, and headed for Galway. Day 5- Cliffs of Moher and Galway nightlife. Day 6- return to Shannon for flight home.
Noteworthy remembrances- Tractors everywhere on all the roads and in all the towns. Smithwick Beer (the best)! How can a main highway be so narrow?!? The nice and helpful people. (thanks Donegal Tyre Center!)
I can't wait to return in the spring, and thank you Michele for your wonderful insights.
Thanks so much for stopping by to relate how your trip went. Sorry to hear about the tire blowout. I always recommend in my book that people take a small flashlight to Ireland with them for just such an eventuality. Ireland at night is like being immersed in Guinness--dark, dark, dark! Glad to hear you enjoyed the Smithwicks (my favorite).
It's great that you are returning in the spring. If you have any questions about that trip I'll be happy to help.
