Feb 7th, 2003- Dublin Pt 1 (Friday)

Day 4- Whatever we damn well please!! (LOL, more Dublin, day trip to Wicklow, whatever)

Once again, a late start- up about 7:30. I went down to smoke in front of the home, while Jeff ss&s’d. Mrs. Kenny was up, bright eyed, fully made up and dressed, banging away in the kitchen. It smelled good!! There was only one other couple there, and it was their last full day. I went into the dining room for some coffee and chatted with them till Jeff came down. I shared some coupons we weren’t going to use with them, and then we ate our wonderful breakfast.
Armed with 4 (so we wouldn’t get lost again) of the little b&b business cards, we hoofed it to the bus stop. I love taking buses in the UK!! It’s always fun, and way more people use them than in the US. We got off at Upper O’Connell St and fell smack dap into a store where Jeff found a “hoodie” (sweatshirt with hood) that he loved and bought. (He can wear his hoodie over his wooly jumper!!) Wandering around the corner, there in front of me was a store that said “Paddy Power”. Oh my god. I felt like a superhero!! Of course, I had to go in and explain to the girls behind the counter (it is a bookmakers) that I needed WHATEVER they had that had their name on it!! They were sweet as punch, and managed to dredge up a datebook & a poster, no charge. (The poster is up at work- I point to it when they question me!)
I suspect that we were woefully undercaffeinated, since at pretty much any excuse, we would stop for a cup of coffee. We stopped at a pub for one, and regrouped. The crowds on the streets weren’t bad, so we made our way towards the river. The air was refreshing and crisp- I had taken my jacket off earlier. One of the fun things we learned was the Irish knack of naming things- the various statues thru-out the cities have funny little nicknames. So I went and sat by “the mick with the stick” (the James Joyce Statue) and had my picture taken. I know I shouldn’t admit this, but then we went into Carroll’s Irish Gift store, and bought all sorts of cheesy souvenirs. Just little things for my co-workers, a penny whistle for my nephew, and Irish flag underwear for my little brother!! Lucky us, the hop on hop off bus stopped right in front of Carroll’s!!
When we were in Ireland, there was a lot of controversy over “the Millennium Spire” (the stiletto in the ghetto) that had just been erected at a great cost to replace the statue representing the River Liffey (the floozy in the Jacuzzi). I thought it was really big, but in no way enhanced the area, or even slightly represent Ireland. But hey, someone must have wanted it. It stands directly in front of the General Post Office where the uprisings were. We stopped there for a bit and just let it all sink in. Then onto the bus!!
We were very lucky, we got one of the sincerely funny bus drivers- his little patter made everything more fun, and there were hardly any people on board. We did the full tour just to see everything once, me up on the top (smoking) and Jeff tucked in warm down by the driver, chatting with him so much, the driver almost missed his cues a couple of times. My god, Phoenix Park is just outrageously large!! And to think people were jogging/running the whole thing! It was neat to see the cross erected for the pope, the US ambassadors’ house & the Irish Presidents home. But definitely a spot I wanted to drive thru, not walk!
