ring of Kerry

We will drive the ring Clock-wise like in your book but what's the best way to do it? Are there plenty of places along the way to stop and eat/go to the bathroom? How long does it take to drive it? Is it best to start off really early etc....
Thanks for any input

Yes start out early - most of the buses leave around 10, so if you are driving you want to get going earlier than that.

Plan on 5 - 6 hrs , possibly more depending on how much/long you stop.
Be sure to stop in Sneem - I love that little town for shopping.

ring of kerry

thanks - I've read so much about it - we could eat a late lunch/earlt dinner if we do the counter-clock-wise thing. I wonder if we start earlier if it would be worth it to go counter-clockwise and get in front of all the busses???

Sorry - can't help you much on this one - Both times I have done the Ring , I did it as a day bus tour.
The good part about the bus tour is the running commentary from the driver, and the break for your driver from driving - your driver finally gets to 'see' the countryside.

The con is , if you get motion sickness - don't do the bus. Those roads are winding, curving , up & down and bumpy. Not a good combination for a person who gets car sick. ( or be prepared with some dramamine :x )

It will all depend on how comfy you are driving by then.

Personally - after having been on those narrow roads, I would rather be on the same side as them, even if I got stuck behind one, than face them on a tiny road, like a demented game of chicken ( the bus always wins).

how do you arrange a bus trip? We will stay in Killarney... does the bus make stops? Do they stop in sneem? there are so many more limitations in a bus - but if they stop enough it may be worth it....how many on a bus??? sorry so many questions...

Re: kerry

You can either book a bus tour ahead of time ( check out Deros tours & Corcoran tours web sites) or your B&B can book it for you, either ahead of time or when you get to their.

The buses usually pick you up & drop you off right at your b&b I think the cost is around $20 -25 euros (not sure though) and they make around 5 or 6 stops - including 1 for Irish coffee, 1 for Lunch , and 1 in Sneem for shopping.

they usually can carry around 25 or 30 people . they are pretty deluxe velour coach seats. 2 on 1 side and 1 on the other.

There are more limitations, but if you handle buses ok, it is a nice way to see the area - you are up higher , so your view is great, and you get to hear all sorts of history and information on the ride.

RE: Kerry

My daughter and I took the Deros Tour out of Killarney and loved it. What a wonderful break for me being the driver plus the bus driver gave us so much information and kept us entertained. I felt the number of stops were just about right and all in all well worth the money. Have a wonderful time....we're going again when she graduates from college.

Hi stannseniors,

There are plenty of pubs and craft shops to stop at along the way that will have bathroom facilities and you won't go hungry on the Ring of Kerry either. If you stop at sightseeing attractions along the way count on it taking the better part of the day...perhaps 5 or 6 hours.

This is the link for Deros: www.derostours.com
