Lodging - Sligo

Hello there! I am planning a trip with my boyfriend to Ireland at the end of May 2004.

We are going on a riding holiday at Horse Holiday Farm in Co. Sligo -- we need to find a hotel in Sligo for one night only before our riding vacation begins at the farm.

Any advice on where to stay? We don't need extreme luxury --just someplace comfy and central. I am looking at the Clarence Hotel as it claims to be close to shopping, etc. Any advice or reviews on hotels there would be appreciated!

Thanks so much.
Bridget

Sligo Hotel

Hi Bridget,

I haven't inspected any of the hotel rooms in Sligo. I can recommend a few B&Bs but they are not right in town. If it's a hotel you want I suggest looking at www.irelandhotels.com A couple of others right in town are the Riverside, Southern and Tower.

You have chosen a lovely county for a riding holiday. Enjoy!

Re: Sligo Hotel

thanks for your reply Michele! I am very excited about the riding trip -- Horse Holiday Farm looks MARVELOUS.

A B&B would be just fine -- we're actually trying to fine one close to the Farm - it's in Grange - not quite sure where that is.

Thanks so much again!

Re: Lodging - Sligo

Also - we've considered flying into Dublin and renting a car to get to Sligo - I'm thinking it will be easier to have a car while we're there in case we want to leave the farm to explore after we finish riding for the day. Any sense in going that route? We fly from the states into London (got an impossibly cheap fare from Los Angeles) -- we were originally planning on staying in London for the night - but then we decided it didn't make much sense to schlepp all of our riding clothes, etc into a London hotel only to have to cart them back to the airport to go to Ireland the next morning - since we land at noon in London -- we thought "why not just get on another plane to Ireland right away?" Any advice on what our best plan would be? I know we're going to be VERY tired so maybe stay in Dublin the first night and drive to Sligo the next day???

Sligo

Hi Bridget,

Actually Grange is north of Sligo. On the main road headed north near Drumcliff is Carbury House, which is nice. I also recommend Iorras on the Rosses Point road. Either B&B would suit you fine.

Your plan to fly into Dublin from London is good. The flight is just less than an hour. But give yourselves plenty of connection time in London as you will need to go through immigration there and may have a long walk to your next terminal.

You will be very tired when flying in from Los Angeles so you should plan on spending the night nearby Dublin airport. Then the next day you will be refreshed and ready for your drive to Sligo. From Grange you can certainly see much of County Sligo and some of Donegal. It is a beautiful area that is off the main tourist track. I'm sure that you will have the time of your lives.

Re: Sligo

Thank you so very much Michele -- we are both SO looking forward to it! I will give you a full report on Horse Holiday Farm -- though you may have already heard of its fine reputation -- upon return for any of your equestrian-minded traveler!
Cheers,
Bridget
