B&Bs, Hotels, or Farmhouses?

I'm trying to decide where to stay during our 2 weeks in June. Which does everyone prefer, B&Bs, hotels or farmhouses? I haven't heard much about farmhouses, but it seems my kids might like to try these. Any and all feedback is appreciated!

i would have liked to try the farmhouses too but we stuck to the B&Bs. The kids would probably like the farmhouses but i would think that those are farther from the towns. We wanted to be able to walk into town so the B&Bs suited us better. I will say EVERYONE i talked to about the hotels has told me they are not as clean and the food is not as good. I'm surious to see what Michelle says about it - she has stayed at so many places - it's nice to hear what she thinks.

Hi Jen,

Why not mix it up a bit and try some of each? stannseniors is correct that farmhouses tend to be a few miles outside of towns but the kids might really enjoy staying at one or two. If you are planning a stay in Dublin a hotel with a room rate (as opposed to a per person rate) might actually be less expensive for your family.

As far as cleanliness, each place is entirely different. That's why I must inspect and stay at each accommodation listed in my book. I have an assortment of B&Bs, farmhouses and guesthouses in my book...and starting in 2004 I will have a small family-run hotel listed (it's an award winner!). More about the awards I will be giving out later.

It also depends on where you are going. Some counties have very few farmhouses, at least not on the sites I used. I would recommend mixing them up, as Michele already suggested. We stayed mostly in farmhouses but a couple of B&Bs, and one castle hotel. Found the farmhouses to be basically B&Bs only farther out from town. Sometimes you can do "farm" stuff, depending on the host/hostess.
The farmhouse association has a much better, in my humble opinion, website and you get much more information about the places than on the B&B site that I used. Many of the farmhouses have websites so you can check them out ahead of time. But that's not always accurate. Just go and have a good time, and come tell us all about it.

Thanks for all the great advice. What farmhouse association? I'd love to check out that website. Also, any ideas of good farmhouses or B&Bs in western and northwestern Ireland--Donegal and Mayo/Sligo especially? Thanks

Well, farmhouses we liked:
Salmon Leap, just outside Killarney, Co. Kerry
Seapoint House, Westport, Co. Mayo
Rocky View Farmhouse, Fanore, Co. Clare
Eden Hill House, Ennis, Co. Clare

A B& B we particularly enjoyed was Caladhgearr Thatch Cottage in Spiddal, Co. Galway.

Glad you found the web site. You can find lots of info like that on my "Links Page". An outstanding farmhouse near Cashel is Dualla House. It really is a special place.
