Loop Head

When I received your new newsletter I was very excited about your comments about loop head. We will be driving from Doolin to Tralee and we were going to spend a night in Ballybunion but may be rethinking that. The main reason was for the cliff walk but It sounded as if there was more to see and do around the loop head. Any Suggestions. Can we drive loop head and still stay in Ballybunion all in on day?

Oh by the way I rented Ryan's Daughter. The scenery was beautiful. Anyone know if the town in the film actually exsists?

Hi MBarnes,

You can do both Loop Head and stay in Ballybunion. It will make a great day trip. Then just catch the ferry across the Shannon and it's a short hop to Ballybunion. If you don't have time for the Cliff Walk when you arrive, do it after breakfast the next morning.

Ryan's Daughter was mainly filmed on the Dingle Peninsula, however, the town was specially built for the movie and was torn down after the film was finished. But you will definitely recognize the scenery from Inch Strand to Slea Head to the Blasket Islands. I highly recommend the Blasket Island Center.

Michele, Thanks for your response. That does sound like a great day trip.

Thanks for the info on Ryan's Daughter. Seeing Ireland on film was really great. Its hard to believe a place could be that beautiful. I'm very excited about our trip. Hard to believe just 3 more months!!!

Quick question: Rain Gear? Do we need to buy waterproof pants also?

Re: Loop Head

I second the notion for Loop Head. It was wild and windy when we were there, but we still had a great time. Take the scenic coastal drive out of Kilkee. It will fool you by the way. The sign looks like it's taking you down a side street, but it really is the correct road. The more obvious one just takes you out to the pier.

Rain gear is never a bad idea and if you are going for walks, yes, take rain pants and a rain jacket. You will appreciate them. I picked up some relatively inexpensive ones made by Columbia at a local sporting goods store and they worked out fine.
